So the intake cooling fan for my ML server died in the middle of inference. I didn't find out until a RTX 3080 disintegrated, and I could hear the output fans screaming like a jet engine through two floors worth of insolation.

You'd think the card would just shutdown as it overheated, but hey MSI works in mysterious ways. The RTX 3090 didn't give a fuck though, I thought PNY was a shit brand, but I'm pleasently surprised that a 350W TDP card was the one to make it out alive.

Tl;Dr don't buy MSI armor.

The fuck you mean Lol no, AMD cards get absolutely shit on on rendering workloads e.g. Blender
AMD cards are abysmal with machine learning because they've completely given up on that field, even after being handed a CUDA transpiler on a silver platter
AMD drivers have been constantly meme'd on for a decade, I get to see this firsthand since Wicked Engine has AMD specific issues crop up on the regular

i love having Xorg shit itself and the amdgpu module crash whenever i try to boot up wicked engine. AMD is totally worthwhile guys!

It managed to halt the operating system. I've never seen something like this happen in Linux and I've been working with it for over 15 years.

In my experience as long as you verify the seller as having a good reputation and plenty of sales, AliExpress wholesale is fine for some electronics. Got a Ryzen 7 7700 for 40% off there (minus fancy branded packaging) after seeing some plebbitors post about it, can recommend. GPUs might be different though, it's a market full of scalpers and scammers

Anyways according to the tracking information it has been delivered... To a city on the opposite side of the country to where my shipping address is. On the 4th I can request a refund so I'll do that. It was a pretty obvious scam and tbh I'm annoyed at myself that I even tried it. Oh well, I'll probably backorder a B580

It’s amusing if you’re only gaming without using ray tracing. More and more modern games are going to continue adopt ray traced lighting and if you want to run those games at the highest quality of lighting settings, upscaling is going to be necessary for a long time.

You have two choices. Be poor and cope with non RT lighting/ abysmal frame rates for games where RT can’t be turned off; or be rich and still cope about using upscaling.

Yeah I don't do RT. Turned it on in the few games I play that has it such as Hogwarts but wasn't blown away by it.

I think War Thunder has it? If it did, I didn't find it remarkable and their DLSS is garbage anyways.

The spectrum of quality for RT implementation is still far too wide atm, unfortunately.

The real winning strategy is to not play AAA slop.

*Edit* A really well done Ace Combat style game with incredible RT lighting could get me to budge on opinions. I just can't care less about FPS games, so I'm in a niche.

A 4060 runs $300 right now. It's probably the least useful on the highest end card, since most games are developed with the PS5 as the lead platform and only barely look better maxed out on a 4090. But if you have a low end card, it makes a tangible difference.
