GPUs & CPUs & Enthusiast hardware: Questions, Discussion and fanboy slap-fights - Nvidia & AMD & Intel - Separe but Equal. Intel rides in the back of the bus.

You can say professional managers took over who don't understand the product and only see a spreadsheet for Xbox and PlayStation. Hence the extreme reliance on throwing money at the product, focus group, demand to expand audience even when it work, corporate sterility for the product.

Steam and Barnes and Noble share one thing in common, the head of the company is obsessed with the product. Barnes and Nobel turned itself around by hiring a bibliophile who's whole world is books.

I have inadvertently collected numerous AMD4 processors. I have decided to upgrade some of my servers. If I want X470 or X570 motherboards, am I stuck overpaying on eBay?

I'm pretty sure the sweet spot for AM4 prices was about 3-4 years ago, so you're probably stuck with boards so expensive nobody wanted to pay MSRP in the first place, or marked up stuff, yeah.

That being said, if you're considering bridging the memory capacity gap by just using 4 sticks instead of 2, those expensive x570 boards with "nuke CMOS and try again" buttons built into the board will save you infinite fiddling with jumpers as you try to find a memory timings configuration with all 4 sticks that boots at all, much less anywhere near advertised speeds.

Couple of tidbits from Apple earnings call at the end of April.

1. Demand for Mac mini and Mac Studio have been higher than expected because of AI. Expected time to reach supply/demand equilibrium is 'months'. Shortly after this, the base Mac mini (256 GB/16 GB RAM) was removed from the online store.

2. MacBook Neo demand has exceeded expectations (described as "off the charts" by Cook) and is currently supply constrained. March quarter records set for Mac install base, including new users and people who had older systems. Double digit growth in many emerging markets, including India and Indonesia.

3. Higher memory costs during March quarter, and expected to get worse as the year goes on. Costs partially offset due to existing inventory, which is starting to dwindle. Supply constraints expected in June quarter for Mac mini, Mac Studio, MacBook Neo.

4. Primary constraints for iPhone are due to nodes, not memory.

My computer has developed an annoying stutter of sorts. It'll just randomly hitch (and if sound is playing, play a buzzing sound). Started a few days ago.

The annoying part. Using performance monitoring tools reveals nothing. No spike in CPU or GPU usage. No drive access. At first I thought it was an issue with having YouTube and a game open at the same time, as that seems to make it worse, but I've seen no common element. Sometimes it will go hours without a problem, sometimes it will do it several times in ten minutes.

Best guess. It's related to the warm weather we've had. But everything is cruising at normal operating temps and the fans aren't picking up (unless it's under load, which is normal). My second guess, related to some software that updates like Steam or Discord.

Apple has raised the price of the mini to $799.00 and doubled the base storage to 512GB. Basically a forced upgrade.

I’m a computer fixer for a school district and we just renegotiated the price for computers and the prices have skyrocketed.

$900 for a desktop with a core 5 ultra, 16GB memory, and a 256GB SSD. It’s now $2,000 to get a Windows computer with 32GB of memory.

I may have won a decent gaming PC with a 5080 in it. I am trying to figure out next steps and possible Name for the new addition to the household.

I have no useful info. But I would check your drives in task manager to see if they are at 100 or a high percent. And if you have more than one monitor try changing the others frame rate down to like 60. I had my second monitor stuttering constantly and it fixed when I changed it to 60 from 144. Otherwise good luck

Fine, I call my computers in my household, Rainbow and Roided Rainbow.

What's your CPU? If it's AMD then it could be Infinity Fabric ECC kicking in, from unstable memory.

HACKER PROOF BASE STATION is the meme answer.

I name my personal machines after furry waifus video game characters. Though this one named itself something boring like Desktop (bunch of numbers) and I never bothered to change it.

There's no drive access spikes. My data/game drive is more full than I'd like. I think so game updates filled it up.

I don't, but I'll look into this. I got a VR headset about a month ago. It's not been an issue, but I can check if it's overwriting my monitor settings

I hope not. Even DDR4 was still expensive when I last checked. I don't have a way of monitoring RAM though. And I've not had any crashes/bluescreens yet. I'll keep saving my work just in case though.

Otherwise good luck
Thanks.

Completely unrelated. Do you guys have any opinions on these mini handheld vaccuum cleaners for computer use?

I've been seeing them about. I think they're intended for cleaning cars and blinds, but I wondered if it would make a worthwhile alternative to canned air for dusting PCs, or if they'd be completely useless.

I have a larger Dyson handheld that I use on my keyboards, it's pretty good, but it's slightly bigger than a makita power drill

No idea how something like that performs

I lack imagination so I just name my PCs after whatever CPU is in the machine, so it's easy to tell which is which on the network. I am a hoarder.
I mostly name mine a combination of their OS and/or some unique feature, but one time, I literally asked chat—an IRC channel I was hanging out in with a few others—for suggestions when setting up a new system, and went with the first one as that was already very fitting.
