Did I just waste a few dollars just because I can't play GTAV on my Linux desktop? Oh my god, how the fuck do I play with my friends now?
dual booting windows 10 as a secondary option to play it could work

Best be installing a Windows partition, buddy.

(Or you can just search for a fix. People have offered a number of them just through a cursory Google search alone. Hell, some people have said that it "just works" for them launching it off Steam alone since Steam automatically downloads all the stuff it needs to run on Linux.)

I know that at this point they still considered the old GTA 2 logo for GTA III, but god it feels weird to see GTA Online in this logo style.

If you look at the back of the GTAV box, you can find that logo underneath the brief legal info.

And hey, seeing something close to the modern GTA Online logo even back then is weird to me as well.

Ah, the iconic font for GTA, Pricedown.

Ray Larabie, designer of the font, created fonts in his free time. Pricedown, obviously, being inspired from the game show: The Price is Right. He designed the car assets for GTA London and GTA2. Little did R* know that the Pricedown font was created in-house when they were designing the GTAIII logo we know today.

Edit: to add, The Price is Right typeface was Pinto Flare. Which Larabie took and made some changes to it as you could see. Or Jazz Gothic if you want to be technical.

You're fucking trash, why the fuck shouldn't I tell these annoying normalfags off ? its a travesty they have internet access
Quite possibly because there are (hopefully) better uses of your time than slapfighting with literal children on social media and then coming on Kiwifarms to seethe about it.

Like the fact that you could be playing a GTA game instead, for instance.

In my autistic curiosity of GTA typefaces, I discovered that GTA2's typeface logo uses a variation of the Microgramma (D) font.

I'm probably reaching with this comparison, but British artist Kiki Dee's Great Expectations album from 1970 uses both Pinto Flare AND Microgramma typeface fonts. I say this because R*/DMA loves to inject their love of music, movies, pop cultures into their franchises anyway they can. And R* is stationed in Scotland.

Likely just a coincidence since Microgramma was common for packaging and publications for a time. It does give a contemporary, techno vibe with its sans serif style.

(There's a better one out there, but this is what I could find.) If I know that a community cannot have an intelligent discussion, I would not engage further as it's a waste of time. Just some advice.

Dualboot or use QEMU with GPU passthrough.
Ah, the iconic font for GTA, Pricedown.
Indeed. I've always wondered why they used the font from The Price Is Right (well at least something close to it) for GTA.

They probably had that logo lying around and decided to copyright it for whatever reason.

Back to GTA2, what an experimental, confusing release in retrospect.

Firstly, its ambiguous time period and setting. It cannot decide if it takes place in the near future (2013), current year (1999), or "three weeks in the future." Best answer would be an amalgamation of retrofuturism with contemporary cynicism of a crime-ridden metropolis. You could tell DMA Design was inspired by futuristic movies for GTA2's direction.

Secondly, which is closely related to the previous point, its branding. How do I put this properly so I won't confuse you or myself any further? Its box art packaging gave mixed signals to the consumer and its own brand recognition to where R* had to change it.

The one on the left is the worldwide release and first print for the UK release. Sales for GTA2 weren't performing as expected to Take 2, presumably due to the naming scheme of using an acronym instead of the full title. Ergo, R*/DMA rebranded GTA2 with a second print by reusing GTA1's common box art, only with a 2 on it. But, only for some countries.

Thank goodness for GTAIII onward, R* designed an iconic box art template that would follow through for the series proper. It shows that R*/DMA was still figuring out how to take their newly made crime game series. Growing pains.

I'd like to bring up that GTA IIIs widely known box art wasn't meant to be the final box art.
It was meant to be this:
1735586804613.jpeg
The EU box art. However, Rockstar changed it because of 9/11, due to all the skyscrapers in the background paired with explosions.
As a bonus, here's the Australian box art.
1735586964466.jpeg
It's the PC version because for some reason I couldn't find a good image of the PS2 release box art. There's also Germany's box art, but that's quite similar to the US box art with a different title logo and different images (it's more similar to GTA 2 in a way, where the title is shown as an acronym)

I didn't expect font spergism from a GTA thread but that doesn't mean I can't appreciate it, thanks everyone.
Oh, don't get me started again. That has been haunting my head for a minute since the design docs were leaked.

Do you know how many different box arts exist for GTA 1, 2 and 3?

GTA1:

1735575491685.png1735575505674.png1735575780158.png1735576083939.png1735576317488.png
US Box Art (PC)UK Box ArtFrench, Germany, Italy Box ArtJapan Box Art (PS1)Japan Box Art (PC)

GTA2:

1735591262527.png1735592087182.png1735592200535.png1735592610873.png1735592652757.png
US Box Art (PS1, PC)UK Box Art (second print)Dreamcast, GBA Box Art (US)Japan Box Art Poland Box Art

Again, remember that GTA2 had to rebrand itself for European audiences so that people would KNOW it's another Grand Theft Auto title. Or, put stickers on later reprints. Now, the second box art revision is confusing because it's the same box art for the original in the same region.

I'd like to bring up that GTA IIIs widely known box art wasn't meant to be the final box art.

Correct. To add, GTAIII's NA cover art (now a staple for GTA today) was created in a day by Stephen Bliss. The template was inspired by an Il Caso Thomas Crown poster.

Gives a noir style of what to expect. Love it.

That's such good original box art, damn. If only that has set the visual template for the box arts in the future.

GTA3's various box arts:

The European box art looks like a cool poster. I see why it was hastily changed for the US, that looked TOO close for comfort after 9/11.

Funny how this sort of conveys an entirely different level of crime. As in smalltimers who almost get shot over $150 in a backalley. Kinda wish there was a low-crime game like that, but I guess low-crime of today is facebook phishing and telling random mothers you're steven seagal. Not exactly GTA type hype.

What I loved the most about GTA games was crew takeover and populating an area, so basically SA gang wars. The most memorable parts of GTA games are when you actively, physically, visually change the map, ie. blowing up buildings or removing a faction from the game. Saints Row did that better. Like I'd fucking love if they added some kind of "Online-esque" component to GTA6, ie. always-changing gang dynamics, but not the kind you need to actively resolve or influence, just "oh I played another 20 hours and went from ~40% control to ~70% in most zones, and now we got more cars and goons".
