Hate to be that old fag, but there was a shit ton of negative reactions when San Andreas was first revealed. Old timer GTA fans at the time were pissed because San Andreas was supposed to be San Francisco and they thought it'd be in the 70's there, but you also had tons of kids pissed off they were playing a black man. One of the big things that ended up being mocked was the phrase "I can't relate to playing as a black character!" And there were even a lot of people complaining that GTA was supposed to be about the Mafia not street gangs, etc. etc.

Actually seeing some of the negative reaction over a female/latina is really taking me back to those early early times in Summer 2004. It wasn't until the game released that all those voices were completely shut down.
I could imagine that was GameFAQs' reaction at the time. Those retards always had the worst takes.

I don't know why I can't help but not believe this at all. I don't suppose anyone has a forum from back then to prove if this is actually true.
No evidence, but I do remember a sizeable backlash against CJ and the Boyz N Tha Hood vibe.

Now that's a name I haven't heard in a long time. Wonder if that place is still around.

The only backlash I remember from SA was the hot coffee bullshit but that was about it. I don't know why anyone would hate the Gangster vibe. It fits with the series very well.

lol okay but it was pretty bad on GameFAQs and some other GTA fansites I went to. I doubt any of it remains based on how Gamefaqs constantly deleted topics back in the earlier days and most of the old fan forums went down.

You have to remember that the biggest gang banging influence in the games at that point had been a handful of missions GTA III.

Exactly. Here in Current Year, if the first thing we learn about a character is their race & gender, they are guaranteed to be a stereotype. The new protagonist is a Latina? Alright, so that means:
  • she'll be super smart, probably the smartest in her group
  • will appear unfit and dumpy, but in action will somehow be ultra athletic
  • snarky
  • easily the most competent person in the room at all times
  • obnoxious hair
  • not ultra hideous but by no means attractive
  • piercings and tattoos, of course
  • at least one screenshot or a clip from the trailer will show a close-up of her face smirking
  • countless articles praising her for FIGHTING THE PATRIARCHY or some shit for not being a sexy character at all
  • but she'll have a big ol' butt anyway
  • at least once, she'll indirectly trash a fan favorite character from the series which'll piss people off. My bet's on Tommy Vercetti
It's pretty amazing how we've all been trained to imagine exactly one stereotype if a character is announced to be a Latina, due to inherent racism baked into wokeness. The concept of her being a flawed, realistic person who doesn't always succeed would be called racist by the very retards championing this, and when the concept of a flawless minority woman is the only acceptable character, you end up with the exact same character for absolutely everything. Characters without flaws, no matter what, are never interesting, because there are no stakes to be had. There's not the slightest risk of her being killed, crippled, or significantly damaged in any way from the get-go, so her character arc can't possibly go anywhere. It's very sexist that such strong rules exist for Latinas in fiction, though not for guys (of any race), but that's how it just is now.

All it took was for them to say "It's a Latina, cry more chuds", and every last one of us know EXACTLY what the entire plot is going to be. For a game that we've been awaiting for years now. From a series where the newest entry is 9 years old. Where the original creators left the company years ago. And that company just added a subscription service to the online side of their 9-year-old game.

GTA is dead. We are witnessing the death of a beloved franchise in real time, as it slowly slips into the woke lava that equalizes all entertainment, turning it all into a worthless toxic slop that you dare never touch. We're all standing by the lava, some of us sobbing, tightly holding onto our old GTA games because we'll always have those. The Last Stand fumbled and dropped his copy of San Andreas PS2 into the lava, but at least he can buy an extra copy for cheap because there were so many made, because GTA was such a beloved series for decades. Now, though, that's all over. TPTB want the exact same Mary Sue as the protagonist for every single piece of entertainment within their reach, and, once again, they're getting their wish. I will not be buying Grand Theft Auto VI. Bring on Yakuza 8 instead.
You're hitting the nail on the head, the fact that these characters are so repetitive and predicable makes it BORING, these fan fiction, Mary Sue style characters are just plain fucking BORING.

The sheer entitlement women have where they act like it's a fucking written law that every single piece of media has to cater first and foremost to their tastes is insane, fuck you, something can be geared towards guys if it wants to be, there's literally nothing wrong with that, it's fucking insane the way the entirety of mainstream pop culture has totally turned it's back on young men, we are a distant and distinct second at best and totally irrelevant at worse, EVERY SINGLE FUCKING THING now is designed to be what a fat chick with blue hair would think is cool.

Just why? Who died and made someone like that Queen of all pop culture?

These people need to FUCK OFF.

If GTAIV has to have a female protagonist, making her at least semi hot, give you the ability to dress her slutty or hell even go streaking, would be a start, giving the character at least some depth and not just yet another typical bland Mary Sue would be even better.

MAYBE it can work, it just mainly depends on how it's executed.

Many didn't think so and wanted to stay with mafia stuff and saw street gang as a step down.

The original GTA had that vibe. The sequel had more of a Postal vibe, though.

I thought I was the only one who noticed that trend of companies turning their back on male customers in favor of the non-existence to very small female customers. That shit happened to DC, Marvel, Star Wars, and various other IPs that catered to the male demographic.

Many didn't think so and wanted to stay with mafia stuff and saw street gang as a step down.
Sucks to be them because SA was a massive success.

Good thing SA proved those guys at GameFAQs wrong in the long-run. Though it sucks that forums and fan-sites don't exist or not as popular anymore.

Trevor is Canadian. That’s barely an immigrant because Canada is just America 2. Also gender non-conforming? I don’t think there’s anything that says that. Also, every GTA protagonist hates the cops. That’s not new. I’m also pretty sure that nowhere does it say he’s pro-environment.

Even if all of these were true, no one would care. The point of GTA is that it’s a parody. No one cares that the protagonist of GTA6 is a Latina, they care that Rockstar is pussying away from jokes.

I remember this as well, the internet was a lot more segmented and there was a lot more open racism on mainstream forums, and I definitely remember seeing a lot of GameFAQs turds bitching about the black characters. But once the game came out CJ and company were pretty universally loved because hey, they were strong and well-written characters.

People will always forgive good characters and only the most annoying and irrelevant people will reduce them to their identities. If this Latina character is good then people will get over it. If she sucks, well...

A take for the ages. Let's unpack this:

"Openly queer." Obviously referring to a couple lines of dialogue accessible through friends activities. Enough for character development, easy enough to ignore.

"Gender non-confirming." HOW? It's obvious that Trevor is a male. Hell, he flashed his penis once.

"Cross-dressing." Uh, okay.

"Immigrant." Okay, so Trevor is from Canada. Mainly because Steven Ogg has a Canadian accent and R* ran with it. Also, his rampages had people make fun of Canada. So...?

"Pro-environment." Yeah, nothing says "pro-environment" like burning, huffing and storing gasoline.

"Anti-cop protagonist." GASP, you mean a game like GRAND THEFT AUTO... you play as criminals that are AGAINST LAW ENFORCEMENT??!?!

Oh my LORD!

I'm pretty sure a few fans were upset about Trevor for whatever reason, I can't be arsed to find it.

SWEGTA needs to know that Trevor is insane. And to not party all the damn time.

Yes, and he's the most despicable protagonist in the entire series. Fantastic post, SWETGA. You will never be a better Youtuber than TheNathanNS.

Running around punching and billy-clubbing people until the cops kill me is excellent stress relief
If you have Watch Dogs 1, you could do that thing I'd do where you fire a gun into the air or something, which causes NPCs to get their phones out and call the cops, and then you can run up as they're calling, grab their phones, and throw them to the ground. Keep going from one NPC to another while doing that until you accidentally let an entire call go through

Mafia III had a similar gameplay mechanic. Hell, GTA 3 was originally going to include such an AI feature.

And Watch Dogs didn't use a billy club. Aiden used a foldable baton; Marcus had a pool ball tied to a string (WD2). Closest thing to a "billy club" in GTA would be the baseball bat and golf club.

I guess you had to find the racist shit back then because I remember the forums I went to be pretty chilled for the most part. The same can be said for Gay Tony but it seems it's a very difficult task to write a non-white or non-straight character now.
