So what do you guys think about the future of GTA Online? Will Rockstar shut down it's servers once VI's online is up or they will simply leave it in an abandoned state?
I feel it will reach a point where the engine cannot handle any more and support will stop. I wouldn't be surprised if GTA Online lasts ten more years.

If people are playing it, and spending money on it, they will keep it up as long as it is profitable.
This is actually not how it works sometimes.

Sometimes, an online service can be making money and still be shut down.

That happens when it's not making enough money for the suits, meaning the staff should be relocated to theoretically more profitable sectors of the company.

Yeah, that's specifically why I put "as long as it is profitable"

I think GTA V online will be up for a few years with minimal life support/maintenance updates, but you willl get some token GTA VI online bonus if you played GTA V as an incentive to move to VI online which will otherwise be a mostly blank slate.

Sorry, I didn't say it properly. To be clearer, it can be shut down for being profitable, just not profitable enough. This has happened to some gachas.
That doesn't make sense. If servers are shut down for an online service, those resources aren't used for the defunct service. Allocating them to other products does not mean that online service is "making money." Servers cost money; if it's NOT making money or having a sustainable population, typically companies would discontinue that particular service.

That does not counteract what I had stated.

I am explaining that there is a difference between "profitable" and "profitable enough to satisfy executives."

The former occurring does not guarantee the latter, and thereby does not guarantee online service continuance.

If that were the case, they wouldn't have shut down the last gen versions(ps3 and x360) online mode
Yeah, I'm honestly surprised they kept it going to 2021 when they stopped updating it in 2015, and presumably most people would have stopped buying shark cards shortly after that. (the only major shark card update prior to this was Ill Gotten Gains which was basically the *first* shark card update)

Some stuff was still kept server-side with R* Social Club. I think it was shut down because of hardware limitations and declining playerbase. Remember that GTA V came out on 15 year old consoles at the their end of lifespan.

On to GTA3: I just like how Claude's first safehouse just had a mattress, sink, microwave and oven. Man was living in a studio.

Ned Luke was apparently swatted during a GTA V livestream. Absolute dick move tbh:

Well he has been kind of a dick in recent times, didn't he say he was a hardcore liberal it took shots at the fandom for crying about GTA VI not coming out? What goes around comes around, I guess.

It is claimed that Rockstar sacrificed Agent and some shitty generic zombie game on the altar of GTA:

It would have been like a Naughty Dog game, I take it, being set pieces with things like submersible cars, shootout on skis and a shootout in space. Superspies, not realistic Cold War fiction (both are empty genres in vidya).
More bad news. Ex-R* developer Obbe Vermeij had created a blog detailing his work with R* based games. Now, R* North gave him a cease and desist for disclosing secrets. Bullshit.

GTA Online and the shark cards that print money ruined Rockstar's priorities.

The only game I can recall that did anything like that were the James Bond games and Alpha Protocol. Guess we'll have to see how that IO Interactive JB game turns out.

Kind of funny they're blaming Obbe for ruining the "Rockstar Mystique" when they pretty much did that by caving into feminist and LGBTQ faggot pressure.
I see other developers have the freedom to talk about game development and such. It's not like he was divulging confidential company secrets. I hate how R* loves to SIT on their beloved IPs, but refuse to do anything worthwhile with them.
