I suppose they realized nobody was particularly interested in buying Shark cards?

Personally I was less than pleased with their good sport bad sport bullshit. Like what if my friends and I want to blow up each other's cars for shits and giggles? I get that there's griefers out there and all but at least let us be on servers where that system is optional.

Trying to force people to behave themselves in a game themed around crime is a losing proposition anyway. Personally I think the high point of GTA Online was the beta testing phase, where I could call my mechanic to land a fully loaded jet fighter on a busy highway for me to use.

It's truly sad that the high point of that game was the glitches. But it's all downhill from there.

For PS3 and Xbox 360, it's shutting down in December of this year. The PS3 and 360 version has had features broken for eons, but instead of fixing it they're turning the servers off.
At least link the newswire article.

The only version of GTA Online that was decent (because they stopped supporting it right as they went full fucking scumbag with the microtransactions)

Nothing to sell on it? Of course shut it down!
When it was relatively new, I thought it was a fun diversion. Certainly not something I would invest time or MONEY with like others. I was mainly a PvP player with the occasional missions.

GTA seems like one of those things that don't translate to online games very well, it's like how The Sims did very well as a single player game but The Sims Online failed, and the only reason why things like Second Life worked is that SL allowed the sort of rampant degeneracy that EA wouldn't allow. (At least EA had the excuse of the T rating, in GTAO, the way I understand it, you STILL can't roleplay as an upstanding urban youth and tell people to "fuck off nigga").

That and the general problem of the "yes I gleefully took a piss on 1990s and early 2000s cultural norms but I won't dare speak out about our inclusive culture today" but that's not exclusive to GTAO nor has gone unnoticed.

Can I get a tl;dr of why GTAV online is trash?

Even if you factor out the pay to win and hacking.

The game is just poorly designed. Anytime you do anything of value, you're automatically made a target for everyone to gang rape.

Every update is literally the same three things over and over.

There is no end goal other than to "buy more shit" or "ruin other peoples fun"

The game took eons to load until some random dude figured out how to fix it. (and IDK how much better the load times even are, I have not played since long before the fix was even implemented)

Your cell phone going off every five seconds if you haven't bought one of the million dollar DLC's.

don't forget Opressor II (flying hybrid of motorcycle and jet engine, which could be armed with rockets on top of that)
So basically it's like a multi-shot rocket launcher in CoD or BF games, or the Retro Lancer from Gears of War. Except more ridiculously overpowered.

I get there's often one overpowered weapon or another in any game but honestly GTA Online was broken from the start.

Plus they won't let me buy a fleet of military surplus vehicles to go into my garage where they belong.

The threat of being a "Bad Sport" never stopped anyone from being a jackass in Free Roam Deathmatch lobbies anyway. The fine for blowing up someone's car is paltry.

I'm surprised they didn't shut them down altogether instead of ending the character transfer. PS3/360 gen allowed character modding out the ass, it was the real reason they stopped allowing character transfer from that gen to ps4/xbone, because it was easy as hell for someone with a jailbroken console to fix up a new character then just transfer it to new consoles. There was an entire economy on this on some gaming forums where people would use an old console to mod up an account with a billion dollars and high rank etc for $5 a pop.

The character transfer thing was an effort to quarantine those players from the current gen. I'm assuming they will have to bring back some iteration of character transfer for this launch though, so it could be interesting if there are people who are able to take advantage of that 1 month window and churn out a shitload of modded accounts to transfer to ps5

Hackers
Long load times
Frequent disconnects
Glitches in general, which can take ages for them to fix if they don't affect their revenue
Absolutely asinine grind to get money, especially with later updates having so many expensive items
Shameless microtransactions as an alternative to that grind (and the reason they've coasted on this game for years)
Until the latest Heist update, none of the updates had done anything to expand upon the map since 2013
Griefers
Bullshit like the Oppressor Mark II and orbital laser that make griefing even easier
Corny bullshit like the flying DeLorean that ruin the original atmosphere and vision
Changing Rockstar's attitude towards their campaigns, leaving them abandoned after launch
The most backwards ass character creation system, good luck making anything look appealing

They make more money than some countries do in a year, there's no excuse for Online to be this flawed 8 years later.

The secret was that you put all of your cash onto your secondary character (not in the bank)

That way, there was no penalty for blowing up other peoples property at all. IIRC this was also a trick to get around paying for damage in Import/Export at one point.

Until the latest Heist update, none of the updates had done anything to expand upon the map since 2013

Isn't the new island so damn linear/scripted and restricted it might as well not even be considered an expansion but just another mission space like all of the heist interiors?

Rockstar are assholes and wants to force co-op on everyone but at the same time encourage everyone to fuck each other over.
Delivery Theft Auto
Long loading (9th gen is free from that)
Never-ending grind
Griefer tools (MKII Oppressor/Orbital Cannon/etc)
Forcing to you drive all over the map (Need a bike for the casino heist, game send my ass to Paleto Bay
Shark cards
Aimbot AI that can put a bullet between your eyes when blind firing with a pistol from over 2 blocks away.

R* does shit that waste your time or annoy you. They have NPCs bombard your phone telling you buy shit, NPC complain at you for not doing their stupid activities, NPC begging you to their terrible missions. Unskippable cutscenes, constantly replaying mission dialogue, NPCs constantly rushing you doing missions (Lester during the Doomsday heist takes the fucking cake for that). Unskippable calls (having a shootout and English Dave calls? well get fucked).

Pretty much, and it doesn't help that it's so poorly optimized for Xbox One & PS4.

For all the attention Rockstar gives it, it's amazing how lackluster Online really is.
