Grim Beard - Youtube reviewer

I like his sense of humour and the skits aren't too bad, plus he doesn't seem to take the whole video game critique thing too seriously.

However, injecting unwarranted political opinions or bringing up misogyny (just because the game shows a bit of cleavage, or a camera zooms in on a woman's ass) are all signs of brain-rot and drag a lot of his videos down. I'm here for the bing bing wahoo, not a lecture on fourth wave feminism.
 
You gave me a heart attack, OP. I assumed that he got a thread cause he did something so stupid or degenerate that it lead to him getting a lolcow thread here.
He's an alright content creator. He has a shitty opinion here or there, but as a whole he got a unique presentation and goes in-depth with his reviews. Much better than most youtubers these days, and one of the few actual reviewers, nowdays it feels like everyone wants to be either a trivia channel(Did You Know Gaming, channels about extremely niche games or sub-communities ect.) or create video essay slop, where as Grim Beard just kind of does his own thing. It helps he likes to cover games you likely forgot about or never heard of.
 
He was legit one of my favorite YouTubers until a few years back.

He's kind of gone downhill after the Mizzurna Falls video. Too much gay commie gobbledygook nowadays and it seems like his output has slowed to a crawl compared to when his videos were still posted as GrimBeard Diaries.

I still enjoy Rat Roundup though and I actually like Parapug, too.

There's honestly already a surprising amount of Grim imitators, knockoffs, etc. with Dungeon Chill being the most notable one but I've discovered two smaller channels in the last year that have taken clear inspiration from him like Trevelyan and Questionably Explained.

Speaking of games with barely any gameplay and GB getting upset because of the most benign stuff... In the Michigan: Report From Hell review he complains about a music video in which a guy films a girl in a bikini playing saxophone on a beach. I really think he relates to women a lot more than men, so he pictures HIMSELF being filmed by a "creeper". I guess that's what you get when you're raised by a single mom.

Yeah, I agree. The naive political takes are just a minor distraction. I do hope he doesn't go full retard and starts taking estrogen because I'd have to drop him like a hot potato.

I really enjoy his song Upload/Decay. It's the kind of music I've been listening to a lot lately (not because of him). If I had an ounce of creativity, I'd probably make similar music. Personal recommendations: Chemlab - East Side Militia, Dunkelheit - Obey, Das Ich - Egodram.

It seems like I've been seeing more often over the last two years too, which I'm guessing is due to something to do with GOG or an anniversary of some kind.
 
God, I haven't thought about Grim Beard in years. I used to like his very very early stuff, but dropped off after he'd been going for like a year.

Contrary to what most people in the thread are saying, it was his humor that ultimately put me off. Not the political stuff, I didn't remember him being like that, it was more the self-deprecating "man, I'm such a weird useless retard" stuff a lot of people his age lean into.

I understand people do that to be "relatable" to their audience, or as a gimmick. But hearing people brag about how they (or their character) are too stupid or neurotic to live makes me not want to listen to them - just like Civvie's constant gimmick of him hating making his show put me off watching him as well.

Grimbeard's skits smack of someone who has/had oneitis or gets super clingy with girlfriends, then when he's single he's a really loud and proud ally in the hopes that it helps him get his dick wet move beyond the friendzone because he's a loner depressed sensitive guy who likes My Chemical Romance.

His Riddick video is alright. It's a deeper dive than Mandalore's recent one and I liked that part of it. My dad is/was really into Pitch Black for some reason and Butcher Bay along with Halo CE were the first and only games we had for the OG Xbox for a summer.

Have to agree with the poster above too about the Riddick video being genuinely pretty good. I never really cared for anything beyond the first game and Pitch Black but the video at least made me feel like, maybe I could dig this series beyond that.

Same. Plus I find his tone of voice and the vibes of the videos pretty soothing so I put him up sometimes when I have trouble sleeping and just need some background noise.

Don't care about his political takes since I'm not American.

I used to watch this guy's content religiously a few years back. I really liked what I, at the time, saw as an unapologetic style with tits and gore in his intros, charming early-internet-style bits and a kind of a unique style of dry humor. I gave the nails a pass because I figured hey, man's a goth and he is committed to the bit which I can respect, but over time his moronic political takes has really sucked the fun out of his content. His comment section is also a parasocial cesspool nowadays and I imagine his Discord is extremely stinky.

I think the first review that really turned me off was the one for The Sinking City, where he after fashioning himself an image of a guy who appreciates nuanced stories and characters goes WHY CAN'T I KILL THIS HECKIN RACIST, IS THIS GAME DUMB OR SOMETHING???. What made me drop him entirely was his "why did the Trump shooter have to miss" joke from his Shadow Man review. I haven't watched any of his new videos since but I come back to some of his older stuff sometimes, like the Pathologic reviews which are PEAK comfy viewing.

His name is Corey Lee Martin by the way, at least that's what he used to sign off his videos with before he blurred it out using YT tools.
