Osprey Publishing's "Weapon" series of volumes are good introductory primers to different iconic firearms systems throughout history. They generally cover the development, mechanical operation, trials/adoption, combat/historical use, and modern recreational shooting for the featured firearm system.

It really depends on what you want a gun for and what your local laws are.
If you want a handgun, then I'd recommend either a semi-automatic 9mm or a .38 Special revolver. Semi-automatics have higher magazine capacity while revolvers are usually easier to maintain.
Both are good choices for a handgun, although I personally prefer a revolver. That being said, handguns are often subject to more legal restrictions, so be aware of local laws.
Shotguns are also good, both for hunting and self-defense. My personal go-to would be a Mossberg 500 or its budget variant, the Maverick 88. My uncle owned a Mossberg Maverick 88 for years and he swears by the Mossberg brand when it comes to shotguns.
If you just want something for plinking or sport shooting, a good .22 Long Rifle firearm is an excellent choice. Ammo is cheap and so are most firearms chambered in the caliber.
Even in states with strict gun laws like New Jersey or California, you can usually buy a .22 rifle with minimal hassle.
I personally own a Ruger 10/22, a very affordable and reliable semi-automatic rifle that is very reliable and fairly easy to find.
A basic Ruger 10/22 is usually not subject to heavy restriction in most states due to its small caliber and default capacity. But it is a very modular gun with a wide variety of aftermarket modifications, both from Ruger and from third-party sources. Some are just tacticool nonsense, but other modifications for the Ruger 10/22 can actually be practical such as an extended magazine or a scope.
The Ruger 10/22 is an excellent rifle for hobby shooting and hunting small game (my uncle usually uses it for hunting squirrel and quail) and there are similar reasonably priced weapons such as the Marlin Model 60.
If you want to go hunting larger game like deer or elk, then I would suggest a .30-30 lever-action rifle such as a Winchester 94 or a Marlin Model 336 (my Dad's Marlin is an excellent brush gun for deer, elk, or even turkey)

If you're serious about guns and their various working functions as a mechanism, nothing is a better resource than the Steam (and mobil?) game World of Guns. It has a ton of accurate 3D gun-models and most firearm pieces are broken down to their finest parts. You can also watch them function in slow-motion while hiding various portions that obscure function. I've personally checked their models against a few of my own real guns and they were 100% accurate part-for-part and breakdown method. It's a great resource for those who don't desire a genuine collection or just wanna see exotic weapons function.
If there's anything else you wanna know, just ask. I've spent many hours around an old machinist gunsmith and have built/serviced a few functioning firearms of my own (1-offs not AR-legos). If you get a .38, don't get a super light snub nose for a first gun, you want something with a bit of mass. If you want to shoot pistols, start with a .22 If you want to shoot rifles, start with a .22 If you want to shoot shotguns, start with a .20ga.

There are plenty of medium frame police trade-in .38s like the Smith and Wesson Model 10 and 15 or the Ruger Security Six. These are heavier and more manageable.

Revolver in 38 is good if is a very light snubnose but if is a full size is better in 357 mag. because you can shoot 357 bullet or 38 bullet with the same revolver. If you don't never shoots the firsts time is better if use 38 but when know your revolver you can use 357, is a strong caliber but is controllable

Good! I have a AK 47, for me is the best assault rifle, i shoots with a lot of different black rifles,AK 47 shoots always,also underwater and if is very dirty and the caliber is good, never failed when shooting. Other black rifles that i use have failed in 3-4 time and the 223 remington is good but i prefer the 7.62 ×39. But the AR for me is the worst black rifle that i have shooting,after shooting i have understand because USA lose the war in Vietnam,every magazine failed 2-3 times, this AR was with direct gas sistem, after modified with short piston system don't have failure but if for shooting i buy the modified is no good!
