Gunmen kill 23 in gun attack on Christians in Egypt: provincial governor

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but in light of the recent bombings I thought that this should be posted. The perpetrators of this massacre are probably members of the ISIS breakaway group hiding in the Sinai peninsula.

Gunmen attacked a group of Coptic Christians as they were driving to a monastery south of Cairo on Friday, killing 23 and wounding 25, the governor of Egypt's Minya province, Essam al-Bedaiwy, said.

At least 23 people have been killed and 25 wounded after gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying Coptic Christians in central Egypt, state media report.

The incident occurred in Minya province, 250km (155 miles) south of Cairo, as the bus headed to a church.

There have been a number of attacks on Copts in recent months claimed by Islamic State (IS) militants.

Two suicide bombings targeting churches in Tanta and Alexandria on 9 April left at least 46 people dead.

At this point they should just let the Israelis do full scale cross-border raids to stomp the Sinai Bedouins and Arabs into submission. It is kind of a prestige thing for them to put a lid on things in Sinai to prove that they can administer it better than Israel. It has always been on the periphery of the Egyptian state in comparison to the core region, and the government has very weak local support there due to military rule and low level of investment in local infrastructure and economy.

Shit like this is why we shouldn't be basing immigration bans on country of origin, but on whether they're actually from a persecuted population. We should be letting as many Coptic Christians into the country as can get here, but keeping out the scum who persecute them and are the reason Egypt is such a shithole.

It's actually become a serious concern to many observers (Christians, academics who are knowledgeable about the Middle East, etc) that Christianity will become extinct in the Middle East within a few decades. Not only are terrorist attacks targeting Christians, the pressure put on them by Muslim societies is forcing them to either convert to Islam or immigrate to countries that won't persecute them. It's not an unprecedented phenomenon; Judaism is practically extinct in every Middle Eastern country save Israel. The Middle East region is the birthplace of both Judaism and Christianity, but radical Islam is doing a great job of purging their adherents from the region.

It's a sad fact to admit, but many Muslims in the Middle East don't give a shit about their religious minorities. They may not actively persecute them, but they don't seem to have a problem with those who do.

I couldn't care less if it wasn't for the Suez Canal. We have a puppet government in Egypt which basically lets us control a chunk of trade. If Israel ends up taking over the Sinai Peninsula in the very near future, I don't trust they will honor our control, and maybe attack our ships again.
