What's the gameplay of these games even like? Are they all just shitty dress-up games?
Mostly, yeah. Some, like on Rinmaru Games, let you change a few facial features.

A lot of them are cookie cutter, though. It'd be nice if someone did something like a body type slider or something.

Actually, Disneyfan01's art of Marina could be easily passed off as something from a doll game

These games look like they were created by someone who learned how to draw animu characters from one of Chris Hart's books (he's still publishing How to Draw books by the way I found out recently when buying some art pens).

Yeah. Now he's moved into how to draw American cartoon characters. I didn't have the opportunity to look through it but the cover indicates he's definitely trying to cash in on the success of stuff like Adventure Time and I wouldn't be surprised to have found My Little Almost-Ponies inside too.

To be fair, that's one of Rinmaru's older games. She's gotten a lot better at facial features since. You can tell the hand-holding one was rushed though.

As for the games being cookie cutters, well, yeah. But most are.

I thought he did at one point. Or did we just only laugh at him in one of those all purpose lolcow threads?

She has, you're right. Though I think the art in the new manga games are done by someone else this time around.
The ones she's done, however, are MUCH better than they were.

I made a thread on Chris Hart eons ago, I'm sure. It just upped and died though. Jesus H in a bucket though I own his magical girl book (2010 was a strange year okay) and what little content he does create for it is FUCKING TERRIBLE. I'm no faboo artist but they have fucking spike fingers. Literally in most of his Manga drawing series he hired all these other much better artists to do art and just kind of put really vague shitty commentary that does not help artists in the least.

I used to go on Pixelbee(I think that site is defunct now) a lot when I was like 11 or 12 because they had a cute little Sailor Moon doll maker. That got me obsessed with Doll makers and anime for the next few years in my life. Some dollmakers were fucking terrible I will admit, a shocking amount of Magical Girl fans on Deviantart spam the shit out of these things and post them up as "art" which is not only annoying but stupid because nobody cares about what you made on a shitty doll maker at the end of the day.
I can remember they had the "Imagine" game series for the DS and all the obligatory virtual pet games (I admit I have a little bit of a weakness for games about raising stuff. I spent like weeks playing Princess Maker 2 in 2012 but then again I wouldn't really say that's the stereotypical "gurl game" considering you can pretty much raise a prostitute or marry your daughter. Fucked up shit. ) I don't think games are something that should be gendered it's pointless and is the reason for this whole "gamer girl" shit and all the sexism girls get on online servers. I don't think much quality is put into these things, it's kind of an afterthought for the developers I guess.
From what I'm assuming is the women that play these kinds of things buy into the whole dress up bullshit and probably have a bit too much time on their hands, if Facebook games have shown anything it's that people will pursue pointless shit all the time because they don't have anything to do. I will admit I do like character customization features, I've spent too much time on Pokemon Y doing this and it's one of my favorite bits of Animal Crossing (second to sending nasty letters to the neighbors) but honestly I don't understand the people that shell out real money for that kind of stuff. It's really a waste.

Oooh wait, I have that guy's book on how to draw shoujo! Honestly, I'm not seeing what's so bad about him. But that's off-topic.

Yeah, back when I was in third grade or so, the "original" dolls (the small pixel ones like I posted below) were really popular. I knew this one girl who printed a bunch out and glued them inside a notebook to show off. I don't even think she made any of them, but rather claimed that they were her property or something.

Christopher Hart only takes the surface elements of manga and really doesn't elaborate on it. It causes a bevy of American (mostly) school children to grow up knowing only these stereotyped elements and not realising that manga is actually quite a bit more than that. Their characters end up looking deformed/flawed and it leads to a belief that, it's supposed to be done that way, when respectable manga artists shun those lazy methods. It's a good way to stunt one's learning in my opinion.
