Funny anecdote that I read in that HN thread:
You don't have to write out IPs as groups of 8 bytes, you can skip some dots (into [8, 8, 16] or [8, 24] groups) and even all of them, using decimal or hexadecimal number instead:

The main argument for using a bunch of hexidecimal is that a 128 bit address would be very long in dot-decimal. 16 octets instead of 4. There really aren't any good solutions to representing a 128 bit integer in a memorable way.
I understand DNS is supposed to be adding support for ipv6 at some point in the future, this may provide a useful solution for those who need to be able to access a particular server.

DNS sucks and certainly isn't the future of the Internet, if the Internet has a future at all, as this very forum's problems with it have demonstrated.
Are you really saying that typing out number addresses is the future and resolving that number to a name isn't? Registrars are corrupted and it sucks that ISPs can just blackhole as they want, but the protocol itself isn't the problem, obviously.

No. I'm merely claiming the DNS won't survive these political issues. There will come some other way to map names to addresses, even if a globally-unique way never again occurs.
