Hacker News - It's not for hackers and it's hardly news.

There's a funny bit of drama happening right now regarding the 60 Minutes documentary about CECOT. Bari Weiss, the new editor-in-chief at CBS, pulled it for further editing/review. But apparently they accidentally released it to a streaming service as scheduled, and some people managed to download a copy before the mistake was noticed and corrected.

Some users tried to submit an archive.org link to the documentary to HN, and it got (correctly) flagged as off-topic, because this is dumb political bullshit. This caused the left-wing contingent to enter seethe overdrive, and they are spamming submissions trying to get it back on the front page. The same URLs are automatically flagged as dupes, but they managed to find five different versions of news articles about the controversy to try to push onto the front page (all of which are flagged). The comments are full of idiots who think YCombinator is censoring their opinions, when in reality people are likely just tired of the front page being filled up with TDS spam (submissions are flagged based on user input).

This is really funny when you consider Trump sued CBS over a 60 Minutes segment and won a settlement, I can imagine Bari wanted to make certain there wasn't anything else in there he could sue them over. Standard CYA move, literally journalists attempting to tell a version of the truth that doesn't get them in trouble, but now it's wrapped up in conspiracy.

I need to post here more frequently. I've been sitting on some funny shit for months.

I like reading Ken Shirriff's website, Righto, but he wrote something that marked him as the kind of person I wouldn't really want to be around earlier in the year:
https://www.righto.com/2025/01/its-time-to-abandon-cargo-cult-metaphor.html (archive)

Here's the conversation on Hacker News about the article, but I'm not going to focus on that this time:
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42675025 (archive)

Ken Shirriff proudly marks himself as someone who wants to dismantle language, through destruction of idioms, metaphors, and analogies. I'll continue to read his technical articles, but I no longer care for him as much as I once did. This is no different than those malicious faggots who want to change Man-in-the-Middle to Monster-in-the-Middle, Person-in-the-Middle, or some other ridiculous shit, since yucky men must be removed from all observations. I'd literally rather kill two birds with one stone than say feed two birds with one scone like some dipshit.

Anyway, I'll summarize Ken Shirriff's article as succinctly as possible: Checkmate, racists, the natives believed their ancestors to have made everything the Europeans had truly made, but that the Europeans had stolen from them as they worked in a volcano, but if they killed all of the Europeans they'd get it back and become white themselves, and actually this is all Whitey's fault anyway.

It's a wild read, and he's still wrong, but I'm not going to bother rereading the entire article to point out exactly why. I'm sure Ken would much prefer for white people to act so stupid so that some metaphor could be constructed about their behaviour, but unfortunately for Ken it's his behaviour exhibiting such madness and he doesn't even know it.

I also stumbled upon this recently while reading about that recent bullshit with Ycombinator darling Flock:

Fuck Garry Tan.png
Here's the headline: AI Startup Flock Thinks It Can Eliminate All Crime In America
Here's the conversation Garry Tan, CEO and president of Ycombinator, had with a stranger on Twitter:
Garry Tan said:
Flock Safety currently solves 700,000 reported cases of crime per year, which is about 10% of reported crime nationwide

And they're just getting started
Jordan said:
this is pretty dystopian man, idk

It's hard to tell if Garry's serious, but I think he should be killed with a brick either way, along with most of the other people involved with Ycombinator and Hacker News. These stupid motherfuckers brag about civil disobedience and other shit, but it's okay, now that we've reached the end of history we don't need people to be able to violate the law. :)

I'd like to bring attention to when Garry Tan was begging Uncle Sam to bail out his buddies who disregard the law and don't pay taxes, for innovation's sake!

Lastly, I was reading about the European Union forcing Apple to let other headphones work with its phones, which defeats the entire point of removing a standard port of course, and this fucking lunatic went on a rant that I must record here. I caught it just before it was flagged, but that means an archive hardly matters:

I don’t see it as a matter of defending Apple, it’s really a matter of technical understanding and competence.

There are many reasons to criticize Apple, but wanting to not only control the exceptional ecosystem where everything just works as seamlessly as possible, but also wanting to benefit from all the work and focus that went into creating it, is understandable to me.

What I don’t think dawns on people is that this is an example of an intersection between what some call capitalism and communism mindsets, or it may be far more accurately described as the ants and the grasshoppers, the freeloader problem.

People like the iPhone for its having worked extremely hard to make its devices work really well, but those same people don’t understand how and why that behavior they like actually came about, so they start trying to “improve” things they don’t have the foggiest understanding about.

It’s a typical narcissistic type behavior and mindset of self-importance, that now that the hard work has been accomplished they’re here to take over and improve things they don’t understand and weren’t involved in creating.

It seems to be a mindset that totally infected and is spreading all throughout the whole West for whatever reason. People simply have no idea how what they inherited was created, let alone even know how to keep it going, not to mention fix anything.

Just alone the fact that it’s EU bureaucrats imposing these things makes it extremely unlikely that it is a good idea, considering not a single consequential tech company has been produced as a function of the EU. It is that obnoxious EU technocratic know-it-all hubris that keeps them even understanding just how little they actually know, which is so dangerous and reeks of malicious jealousy.

At least in the USA, the idiots in Congress are accountable to a constituency that elected them, and they tend to be able to discern that they simply don’t know enough to interfere with how Apple (for example) is doing what it does to produce the world’s best devices and services.

Not the EU and its blob of unelected bureaucratic despots and unelected Commission of dictators, it is confident it knows more than Apple about how to do what all of Europe cannot seem to actually accomplish. Europe has not even been able to emulate what the Asians have done by forking Android, but here they are, wagging their fingers telling people how it is. Why do Europeans not get tired of that pathetic attitude?

Frankly, I wish Apple had the non-binary balls to simply just cut off all iPhones in Europe rather than bend to EU despot dictates.

At least I can hold onto the gleeful spite that Apple may just use this as an opportunity to push people into buying more Apple products by demonstrating that, e.g., “your use of non-Apple headphones has caused your phone battery to drain 10% faster and damaged the battery by 5%”. It’s perfect advertisement… brought to you by the idiots in the EU bureaucracy playing tic-tac-toe strategy against grand masters.
:story: I nominate this guy for the first brick. At least the archive saved some of the responses, surprisingly not all of them calling him a fucking moron:

Your comment is absolutely spot on, no notes. Wish your attitude was more popular and prevalent around here. My guess is that before 2017 or so it used to be.

You're getting downvoted but it's absolutely true that people simply don't want to (or are incapable) of considering second and third order effects that arise from applying interventions on systems that they do not understand.
I hate anyone who thinks preventing corporations from doing whatever they want to everyone on Earth to be Communism. Just fuck these people. :story:

Ken Shirriff proudly marks himself as someone who wants to dismantle language, through destruction of idioms, metaphors, and analogies.
So he's basically mentally retarded. He wants to destroy all human communication and render us barking animals. He should neck.

He’s 100% serious.

Garry Tan, Sam Altman, and all other current Ycombinator guys are incompetents who’ve never built a profitable company and are living high off of the reputation earned by others in the early 2000s. Sadly, your pension fund has bailed out Garry’s shitty investments numerous times.

He’s also an unironic Asian Supremacist.

They're only a notch above Elizabeth Holmes from Theranos as criminals, and only because the technology they're selling actually exists.

I waited to post this because I didn't want to write a mean post on Christmas, but that hopelite (archive) fool is still going and it's hilarious to me:

So do I. And my >20 years in the business gives me the experience and knowledge to see through Apple’s FUD.

It is my device. I paid for it. If Apple thinks they deserve more money for what they did they are free to ask me, the customer, for more money.

> […] unelected bureaucratic despots

Aha, the dog whistle of the AfD brand of conspiratorial bullshit ”unelected” nonsense! Career bureaucracy is supposed to be certified and educated, not elected, because that is the only way they can properly implement the laws of the electorate. Bureaucracy still answers to elected officials, but they are supposed to act without political interference and provide specialist knowledge. For the same reason you do not vote on every captain and colonel in the military hierarchy, or every tax collector/auditor in your IRS equivalent, you do not vote on every bureaucrat in the Commission tasked to execute and implement law.

You had me convinced that you were a self-absorbed narcissist at “it is my device” without any self-awareness about the fact that it is your device that you purchased as it is, under those conditions; not some fantastical conditions you imagined you should have.

But you really just emphasized it with the AfD nonsense, as if everyone in the world cares about your little provincial political obsessions. “Eeek, the eradicated Italian ideology of 80+ years ago that I have been conditioned with basic Pavlovian techniques to hate to control my mind is coming for me”. Ever hear of the book 1984 and the purpose of Emmanuel Goldstein? You seem to have totally missed that they used that very same technique on you, they just templated a different event on your little mind.

Are the commission popularly elected? No they are not, child. But do explain your narcissistic rationalization for how being not elected by the relevant populace makes calling them unelected nonsense. You can’t.

Why are you so fixated on running interference for what amounts to being a cult? Do you personally benefit financially from it or something? Nothing else makes any rational, sane sense. At least if you financially benefit from your own subjugation to unelected tyrannical despots in the commission and the council, at least you can say you are corrupted, greedy, and unprincipled… if you have the confidence and character to admit it.

But you lack the most fundamental understanding of how the EU and government, let alone different systems work or are suppressed to work, so I am not sure that your statements allow for any other conclusion than that you are deluding yourself either intentionally or in some belief that you can fool or gaslight me and others.

Besides, let’s have you put on your own thinking cap for a second. Take off the mind control cap for a minute and put your thinking cap on. Ready? Do you think it is smart for the same commission that originates imaginary “legislation” that the parliament votes on like any other dictatorial system’s apparatchiks do, should also be the body overseeing the implementation of that law? It breaks the most fundamental and major human advancement in governance produced by separating powers through the Constitution. You said people should be educated. Forget government education for a second, you seem to lack the ability to think at all. Do you not understand the danger of the legislative also being the executive? It’s basically just a novel form of aristocracy you are defending, a regression, total conflict of interest in abusing power … which they aren’t even elected to.

What has been done to your mind and all of Europe is commonly called a bait and switch, also known as coercive control in basic abuse patterns of toxic relationships.

You’re quite literally just a textbook abused person rationalizing and excusing the behaviors and actions of your abusers, like someone in any other toxic relationship or a cult.

Please reconsider the harm you are doing to the world and yourself too. I get the EU told you there was candy in the windowless panel van, but you have no idea what mistake you are making and are going to make others suffer for.
:bossmanjack: I share a world with people this fucking stupid. The ancients were right, the natural born slave exists, and hopelite is certainly one. The absurdity of calling someone a narcissist because he doesn't think a corporation should get to control the world through a fucking phone is just great. He's accusing people who disagree with Apple of fascism. Everything is fascism these days. He gets bonus points for his Tomlinsonian use of "child" in his rant.

It's hard for me to tell what this fool believes as I look through his commenting history, but I believe him to be one of those libertarian fuckwits. He simultaneously warns against a technological dystopia, but also believes corporations should be allowed to do whatever they want, apparently, so libertarian sounds about right.

He's accusing people who disagree with Apple of fascism.
No, he literally never used the word fascism and correctly described the EU’s totalitarianism and fake democracy. The crazy person and natural born slave in that exchange is Y-bar who is worshipping the bureaucracy, hopelite is just autistic and doesn’t realize that talking with Eurotards is a waste of time.

Since day one, AirPods have worked with Android phones as normal Bluetooth headphones and iPhones have been able to be paired with any third party Bluetooth headphones. Both devices have always been interoperable with the wider ecosystem to the same standard as every other device.

What the unelected EU bureaucrats want is for Apple to take new features they invented (e.g. fast pairing) and give them to their competitors for free. That is stupid and destroys all incentives for innovation.

The EU also doen’t actually care about interoperability, they just picked something that Apple isn’t doing so they can fine them to get more money to prop up their failing welfare state. If Apple had gifted their new tech to others, the EU would have just come up with some other excuse to steal their money. The EU makes more money from “fines” on American tech companies than they do from income tax on European tech companies, the money is the only thing they care about. Just look at how the EU fines tech companies for not protecting their customers’ privacy while simultaneously demanding that they remove encryption so the government can spy on everyone.

Besides all that, the surest proof that I’m correct is that hopelite’s comment is dead. Only correct comments get downvoted on Hacker News.

Counter point: Apple barely innovates as is, makes worse products than ever before in the pursuit of profit chasing, they perpetuate the idea that you don't own the hardware you purchase and they employ Indians, therefore everything bad that happens to them is deserved.

Since day one, AirPods have worked with Android phones as normal Bluetooth headphones and iPhones have been able to be paired with any third party Bluetooth headphones.
In the greater conversation, people are claiming that AirPods have a botched Bluetooth implementation which makes them work worse on everything that isn't an Apple product or which lacks specialized code just for them.

That is stupid and destroys all incentives for innovation.
Apple innovated the removal of a standard interface purely because it was an issue that people could use headphones without Apple's explicit permission. The entire point of removing the headphone jack and making them wireless like this is to fuck up something that previously worked effortlessly.

Also, there's good reason to believe AirPods are going to give people fucking brain cancer, what with two different radio signals as close to the brain as possible, but it's not like that'll get researched while there's money to be made.

The EU makes more money from “fines” on American tech companies than they do from income tax on European tech companies, the money is the only thing they care about.
Germany's Zeiss produces the mirrors the Netherlands' ASML has as part of its machines which Taiwan's TSMC uses to make Apple Computer's chip orders. Apple produces much of nothing, and certainly doesn't let any of those businesses take rent from it, but then turns around and argues it deserves to dictate the economy and skim off the top by refusing to truly sell its products. This is disgusting behaviour.

The industry standard is Bluetooth now, and wireless earbuds are better for 99% of people than wired ones (which you could still use with the free Lightning-3.5mm adapter that was included with the first iPhones that didn’t have a headphone jack). Cable-snagging is a thing of the past and you can now leave your phone on its charger and walk around without losing your music or ending your call. Normies LOVE wireless earbuds; the only people who don’t are autistic techie contrarians (you) and audiophiles who always used external DACs anyways.

Europeans love to use regulations to enforce the status quo, which is why they’re falling behind the US and China who aren’t afraid to try something new.
Also, there's good reason to believe AirPods are going to give people fucking brain cancer, what with two different radio signals as close to the brain as possible, but it's not like that'll get researched while there's money to be made.
That’s probably about as real as the European belief that air-conditioning causes “thermal shock”. You guys love creating fake diseases to cope with being poor instead of criticizing your oppressors (though I understand that you’d be thrown in prison if you spoke up). Maybe if the EU didn’t steal all your money and regulate your economies into the ground, you’d be able to afford wireless earbuds.

I believe in a world in which both the EU bureaucrats as well as Apple are wrong, bad, and retarded. The EU should shut the fuck up and stop dictating what foreign companies are allowed or required to do, and Apple should stop hiding API calls behind Apple-Only equipment requirements. I want to use something like Pebble (2025 revengeance) with an iPhone and have it do logical things like handle calls no matter which app the call comes from.

Of course Apple devices are going to work better with other Apple devices because of the shared ecosystem, but Apple also intentionally makes other devices have a worse experience in hopes people will get tired of it and pony up for an Apple device that actually works the way they want it to. It's a fucked up business model in today's interconnected world, but at the same time fuck the EU for thinking they are the world's business police in the same vein as the UK and its retarded Online Safety Act telling the Kiwi Farms that they need to let their inspectors sniff around just because UK citizens could use this site if they desire.

Also, there's good reason to believe AirPods are going to give people fucking brain cancer, what with two different radio signals as close to the brain as possible, but it's not like that'll get researched while there's money to be made.
Seriously nigga? Please tell me you're joking.
