Hacker News - It's not for hackers and it's hardly news.

  • 🐕 I am attempting to get the site runnning as fast as possible. If you are experiencing slow page load times, please report it.
Current year 2600 is borderline cowish. But probably too niche and not entertaining enough for a thread.
The official 2600 YouTube channel published "intercepted" Canadian trucker protest communications when protestors shut down those streets in Ottawa.

The irony of narcing on a grassroots anti-establishment protest was lost on these retards. Bunch of spoiled, autistic, histrionic Gen X tattletales finally showing their true colors. Bet they cheered when Trudeau started freezing bank accounts.

Tracking dumbfuckery on Hacker News is a full-time job, but I already knew that.

Unfortunately, as we now know, we're not going to see Silicon Valley hipster faggots jumping off the roofs of their startups during this economic collapse, because they got bailed out by Uncle Sam. Still, I've collected some entertaining messages to do with this.

Contrary to perhaps popular belief, corporations aren't blindsided when their uninsured money gets lost, but expecting them to know this is apparently too much:

They cry out about the poor unemployed proles impacted by not bailing out a bank, while simultaneously conspiring to destroy real businesses that also employ poor proles. People have rightfully compared this negligence to not keeping backups of important data, and then crying when something bad happens to the only copy.

An interesting observation about how the rich investors will now try to save face was made:
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35127447 (archive)

Here's some of that face saving now:

I don't care to screenshot or even necessarily read all of this panicking from earlier:

It's great that Twitter now allows idiots to write fucking essays. I wonder if MovieBob is using this feature by now. Anyway, I invite someone else to read the Twitter logs of these fools in more detail.

Here's some users mocking audiophiles before seriously falling to the same nonsense:

Someone wondered why banal Indian politics are on a website ostensibly for hackers:
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35160665 (archive)

Lastly for this collection, where else but Hacker News would a conversation about invasive WWW tracking lead to someone shilling his product that does just that:
Screenshot_2023-03-21 Web fingerprinting is worse than I thought Hacker News.png
Now, to their credit, this comment was flagged just after I caught it, so an archive now is rather useless. Personally, I avoid most of this tracking and fingerprinting by disabling JavaScript most of the time.

One strange observation is that HN is simultaneously hated by trannies for being "transphobic" but is filled to the brim with corporate bootlickers, I don't know why though.
This is common with milquetoast communities, like Reddit. Basically, any place not fellating a tranny is transphobic and it's clear the people who believe this never visit websites with the real hatred, or they're simply lying for pity.

For some reason can’t quote the OP @UERISIMILITUDO’s last reply

, but on the dominoes, I will say this: AI is the last stop before the fall. I expect it to be an implosion and all the tech bros will have no fucking idea they stopped being relevant.
I saw something hilarious on just this note lately:

In 2021 I remember thinking how tech really proved its worth by so quickly assisting our economies through the pandemic with e-commerce, video conferencing and work from home.
He never considers that maybe the so-called pandemic wasn't such a big deal after all. I remember the praise given towards innovations such as Zoom, for doing something people were doing thirty years ago, but far worse. He just can't wrap his head around the thought that maybe none of that nonsense mattered. Maybe unprofitable food delivery services and work from home for people who have jobs that can already be done entirely by machine don't matter much in the grand scheme of things, and now he's shaken.

Does the saga of Michael O Church deserve a mention in the OP?
I've never heard of him, but write him up and I'll include it.

Current year 2600 is borderline cowish. But probably too niche and not entertaining enough for a thread.
The last 2600 magazine I've seen had a mockup of the Google homepage on the cover, except it was called "Boomer" and had references to lawns and whatnot. It's a rag.

Lol. LMAO even.

A national divorce should be an easy sell to this faggot. He should take has "highest contribution to GDP" muh service economy counties and fuck off to form his own country. No takesies-backsies though - we're building a wall around our country and outlawing degeneracy. He'll be shot on-site by an army of minutemen if he has second thoughts and tries to illegally immigrate to America 2.

I can't believe this Missouri jerk put us exactly five people over the future carrying capacity of the entire planet and society. Seriously, where does he get off?

Great thread.

I absolutely despise HN because of the concentration of morons and the fact they seem to talk about hipster abstract languages and technologies they have close to zero idea about. It is a vanity fair for people who just repeat what they read somewhere else with no understanding of the topic. Kinda like ChatGPT but with real people posting the opinions.

Here are the two comments from some chatGPT-related thread, "Post-GPT Computing":
1679681037437.png
(archive)
The first commenter has some critical thinking skills but the list of things he expects from GPT shows that he clearly does not understand it's a natural language model and not a free code generator. The second commenter knows jack about programming, but he is blown away that a language model correctly generated code for his use case! Because what he asked for is something that an experienced web developer would just copy from Stack Overflow, adjusting some variable names and constants. Which is precisely what GPT when generating code, because it's a language model, go figure.

The linked blog post (a) is hilarious on it's own:

Yes buddy, for bootcamp trash like you it's a solved problem.

I have immense amounts of fun reading the "San Francisco" threads; they are ALWAYS full of hacker nudes who live in or near SF talking about how absolutely shit the city is now, and everyone else jumping down their throat because it is completely against the going liberalism line.

That doreen woman (is she really a woman) is something special; she'd probably be worthy of further investigation. But mostly harmless.

Here's an example of the enredditing of HN: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35290460 (a)

I cannot believe supermarkets these days, it is insane the increases in prices, I’ve seen £5 for a tube of normal toothpaste and £6 for a tiny Pizza that is sometimes available for £3. How people on modest salaries survive I don’t know.
oh god six pound pizza the poors must all be dead
A good if overly simplistic model of inflation & recession etc... is building a rocket in the game Factorio
no more needs to be said
What kind of candy bars are those? That's like 10 candy bars. A US Hershey bar is only 220 calories which is pretty standard for a candy bar. The real MVP for calories at minimum price is peanut butter. A bottle of Walmart peanut butter apparently goes for $2.18 currently and is 2880 calories total.
hunger has been solve, everyone stop buying candy bars and eat penis butt instead
Looking at the conditions that "beef" is raised in - feedlots specifically - the price for beef is way too low. Of course it should be raised by laws requiring better living conditions for the animals, not by the operations staying the same but making more profit. Same for all kinds of meat really. I happily eat meat, and of the more pricey variety and not the cheapest I can get, but I'm willing to pay the price (and I'm not earning much) if the animals are treated better.
lol. lmao even. conspicuous consumption for moral rights!
I've been off beef for a long time now (family of 5). My grocery bill is $2k/month and my kids are still young. I can't imagine what it'll be when they're all teenagers.
what the actual fuck are you spending $2,000 a month on, candles?
I believe that we can make a small dent on this problem if we improve the technology that runs greenhouses. (My bias: I work for a startup that is working on this and I'm kind of obsessed with the industry.)
hahaahhaha no
What about grocery store profit margins?
> Bread was up 20.8%, with pasta products and couscous up 25.3%

This is unjustified. Under no circumstances could this happen unless a) price gauging, or b) supply chain is drying up.
It is completely impossible that inflation could affect the price of bread in such a way it would go up 20% without price gouging.
I know this doesn't fit the European worldview, but if only they had Costco.
American mass-market stores solve everything!
There are about 30 Costcos in the UK. You’re right that they aren’t particularly useful for weekly grocery shopping unless you have a car and a large fridge.
oh they do have them, but the carbrains keep them to themselves, oh well, fuck the UK
Would it not make sense to have a crypto solution to the inflation problem? Can't governments initiate a crypto currency which can be only used for a basket of goods and the providers of these goods can then exchange this currency for input goods or fiat money after verifying. This crypto coin can be distributed to everyone every month/week and with a expiry date.
crypto will solve everything

I deigned to glance at Lobsters lately, and noticed this:
https://lobste.rs/s/mbgpma/i_ve_been_employed_tech_for_years_i_ve (archive)

Here's the article, which really isn't worth reading; the title is enough:
https://emaggiori.com/employed-in-tech-for-years-but-almost-never-worked/ (archive)

It suffices to write that I generally agree with the article, in that I figure most of these programmers barely work, and they clearly make work for themselves. I'll use the example of Twitter as evidence: I'm supposed to believe hundreds of millions or billions of dollars were poured into a shitty website and, after a decade, those programmers sneered at being fired by claiming that the system would fail without constant maintenance? They're either malicious, incompetent, stupid, or all three in that case. Again, they obviously weren't working much.

Now, I wondered why I'd not seen this on Hacker News. I correctly figured it had been flagged; I found it through searching by domain:
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=35178874 (archive)
Screenshot_2023-03-22 I’ve been employed in tech for years, but I’ve almost never worked Hacke...png
I particularly like the top comment:
Screenshot_2023-03-22 I’ve been employed in tech for years, but I’ve almost never worked Hacke...png
The reality is probably more boring: that programmers are roughly as (un)productive as everyone else. But we can see (and therefore evaluate) our own non-productivity, making it easier to overstate.
Actually, everyone is just as stupid, lazy, and incompetent as the average JavaScript code artisan on Hacker News, but the code artisans still are better because they recognize their ignorance, like Socrates if he lived in Silicon Valley doing almost nothing, except I doubt any of these fools will be executed for corrupting the youth, unfortunately.

Now, back on the topic of Lobsters, I've remembered these two furry-flavoured faggots who often submit their work there:
https://xeiaso.net (archive)
https://soatok.blog (archive)

Either of these fools, if given attention, warrants more than a mere mention in this thread. They may deserve dedicated threads. The latter is our typical obnoxious furry who injects his fursona into his articles:
https://soatok.blog/2023/03/01/database-cryptography-fur-the-rest-of-us/ (archive)
Screenshot_2023-03-24 Database Cryptography Fur the Rest of Us - Dhole Moments.png
The former is more interesting. Being a furry isn't enough, so he's another faggot who also claims to be a plural system, which means he pretends to have multiple personalities. Like the latter furry, he injects his multiple fursonas into his articles, each one supposedly a different personality or some stupid shit:
https://xeiaso.net/blog/coffee-isekai (archive)
Screenshot_2023-03-24 My Coffee Isekai.png
This article goes into great detail about how his Fluttershy tulpa helps him to correct his programs:
https://xeiaso.net/blog/plurality-driven-development-2019-08-04 (archive)

Now, I don't personally dislike either of these fools, and they can act as foolish in public as they wish, but if they do so then they need to be prepared for some good, old-fashioned public mockery in-turn, right?

If either of these fools warrants a thread, I should probably write it before this thread leaves the Prospering Grounds, so they won't notice too early.

>tfw no pony tulpa who helps me to write code
I'll have to make do with just one mind. It's what she would've wanted.

I've never heard of him, but write him up and I'll include it.

I don't have much time but just throwing some more info on MOC out there to help out @ditto or anyone else who wants to add him to the writeup: he genuinely believes that Paul Graham, or someone on his behalf, hired a homeless guy to attack him on the streets of San Francisco as some sort of Mafia-style threat:

1679767864533.png

Link: https://michaelochurch.wordpress.com/2017/12/05/why-i-didnt-do-it/
Archive: https://archive.is/CZYMF

MOC is fascinating to me because he's nuttier than squirrel shit but his writing on programming, and basically just programming/CS, was actually really good. While he was skilled at writing about computer science and I can believe he's a good programmer, he's way too fucking insane and self-aggrandizing to wade through a bunch of stuff about how he's basically John Connor and Paul Graham is Skynet, just to read an interesting article on type inference systems or whatever. Especially since he completely stopped writing about coding. And whatever he's up to now isn't in the public online eye. He hasn't really tweeted, updated his blog (or Substack which he seems to have abandoned, after saying he was moving his writing off WP), or posted much of anything on Reddit in months.

Moderator dang has gone off the deep end. Here he is chastising a friend of stabbing victim Bob Lee for speaking ill of San Francisco, that safe and progressive hacker utopia.

To be fair to dang there are two threads lol. One is a flame war thread that he hasn’t locked, which is surprising. I think dang either a bit flamewar friendly or he knows if he doesn’t let it vent in the thread it will spread.

He vacillates back and forth on this, but always end up siding with "don't say things that make [trannies and progressives] uncomfortable" while letting far worse slide if it's directed against conservatives.
