I kid you not, @itch.io has been taken down by Funko of "Funko Pop" because they use some trash "AI Powered" Brand Protection Software called Brand Shield that created some bogus Phishing report to our registrar, iwantmyname, who ignored our response and just disabled the domain

An automation, BrandShield, sent a report on behalf of Funko that resulted in the itch.io domain being disabled. I found out about this here:

From what I can tell, some person made a fan page for an existing Funko Pop video game (Funko Fusion), with links to the official site and screenshots of the game. The BrandShield software is probably instructed to eradicate all "unauthorized" use of their trademark, so they sent reports independently to our host and registrar claiming there was "fraud and phishing" going on, likely to cause escalation instead of doing the expected DMCA/cease-and-desist. Because of this, I honestly think they're the malicious actor in all of this. Their website, if you care: https://www.brandshield.com/

About 5 or 6 days ago, I received these reports on our host (Linode) and from our registrar (iwantmyname). I expressed my disappointment in my responses to both of them but told them I had removed the page and disabled the account. Linode confirmed and closed the case. iwantmyname never responded. This evening, I got a downtime alert, and while debugging, I noticed that the domain status had been set to "serverHold" on iwantmyname's domain panel. We have no other abuse reports from iwantmyname other than this one. I'm assuming no one on their end "closed" the ticket, so it went into an automatic system to disable the domain after some number of days.

I've been trying to get in touch with them via their abuse and support emails, but no response likely due to the time of day, so I decided to "escalate" the issue myself on social media.

I guess we'll see what happens. The DNS is doomed long term, I think. Shit like this will only become more common.

IIRC Nintendo have been testing the waters with a similar company to take down Pokemon famgames.
Moon Channel referenced this in a recent video. Can't remember if it was the one he did for DYKG or not.

Goyslop on goyslop violence, although I hope this stunt gets VERY expensive for Funko, as well as the domain registrar. Fuck the copyright mafia, and also fuck all service providers eager to throw their customers under the bus. Using "IWantMyName" for your business domain tho... lmfao

I am Leonard Somero, I run verysoftwares.itch.io. I have over 300 followers and a game with 20k+ plays that has been repeatedly featured on the front page.
This certainly changed my morning routine! I am glad to hear that the reason wasn't me deleting my Twitter from my page. My first panic reaction was thinking it was me who's caused it, due to some kind of ad revenue conflict.

Ever seen the movie Summer Wars? I felt like the protagonist for a moment there, but glad it turns out it was just some 2020s AI nonsense.

Either way, there's surely an engineer somewhere who's very busy right now.

Some of the comments in the HN thread are actually hilarious. this nigga with 300 followers thought removing his twitter from his page somehow broke the entire site.
definitely not a quick reason to shill his store, nope!

We need a dedicated thread for deplatforming/infrastructure fuckery. Shit like this is way too common now. It happened with nitter.net and several archive.today domains just to name a few examples. More people need to realise anything on the Internet can just be taken down with a few emails and a few lies.

At least on brutalist I know what I’m in for when I see an articles on NPR or Fox News and can roll my eyes at a headline and click on it, or not, without someone’s hot take or editorialization.

I’m a passive consumer of news due to being banned from everything anyway. And now I like completely removing google, Xitter, meta, Bsky, and basically everything else from the equation. They’re all fucking parasites who get something out of presenting me with headlines, or promoting some while suppressing others anyway.

They remove people based on speculative off-site behaviour. Low level trolling can be done by pretending to be a publisher before breaking TOS off-site.
