Half Life Alyx and Boneworks - The two VR games that dare to be different. Okay maybe just one, but still. AKA Floop’s shill thread.

Is VR the big gay?

Because it's the same as pre-orders. You're putting in money because they promise to give you something, not because they already have. Shit like this is why Star Yiddizen, and a metric fuckton of other Kikestarters all failed. You're essentially letting them fool you into "supporting" a brand with no guarantee on their end on actually delivering.

Now, I'm well aware this is Valve we're talking about, and there's a higher chance they might actually do something with the series now if this actually takes off. But the principle of the thing applies: give them money only if they make something you want and can use. No sooner. All this "brand loyalty" bullshit is just marketing and social engineering at work.

This is something I very, very rarely do, the only Kickstarter I ever contributed to was for Bloodstained because of how much I love Castlevania.

It's got to be something very special, obviously people shouldn't just go throwing money around willy nilly, but once in a blue moon a little money as a show of support for something, I don't think that's a big deal.

This technology will get cheaper, so don’t spoil the entire game for yourself by watching someone else play it on YouTube.

Okay it’s not THAT long

Sorry, nearly a decade. Portal 2 is excellent, and I do feel legitimately bad for forgetting about it. But it’s important to note that it was made by a pre-Dota 2 Valve at the top of their game. Hell, TF2 was still free to play in 2011.

If that doesn’t show the seismic shift in company capabilities/priorities, then I don’t know what does.

I also just realized, wouldn't VR be perfect fit for Portal?

What a coincidence! So did Valve:

If my memory serves they previewed it at GDC before dropping the project. Modders have since come in with Portal 2 VR content to fill the gap. There might be more to the story but I’m at work and can’t research right now.

I'm glad Valve are reviving Half Life, but I'm not excited about the VR.
Source 2 is a huge improvement, but to be honest, those graphics look dated for 2020.

The people who actually cared about Half Life and Portal are long gone from Valve, and this whole thing smells like a strategy to put their VR headset on the market, by playing with nostalgia from their audience that is 25-35 years now, a.k.a the same people who scream for Marvel superhero movies.

I've seen enough I'm willing to give it a chance; And by that I mean waiting until release then seeing if the hype held up mostly.
If it did I'll see if my Job has given me enough savings to finally bite the bullet on VR and try it out.

Why didn't they just make Half Life 3 in the 10+ years since the last one? This is, regrettably, faggot shit.

One thing that I think went wrong that I haven't really seen people talk about is that the PC market changed.

Basically you could no longer release a AAA game as a PC exclusive after a point for whatever reason, Valve's usual method for Half-Life was to release a totally cutting edge game on PC then port it to consoles later.

They did experiment with simultaneous console and PC releases for a while, but when the time came to maybe "raise the bar" again suddenly having to do both would hold them back a bit, especially as the 7th gen consoles aged, Valve was always a very PC developer, so when you couldn't really release games like you used to on PC, I think that killed a lot of their enthusiasm for game development.

But now because of VR they have the perfect excuse to make it PC exclusive again.

What the hell is this from?

They hired back most of the team for this project, I think i read something like a third of the team are guys who worked on Half Life 1.

Gabe also stated theyre expecting to lose money on this game, so its pretty obvious theyre making this as a loss leader, hoping to expand the market and increasing steam revenue.

Im excited actually, been considering VR for a while, and this might convince me.

A hilarious Gabe Newell interview from 2013
Good ol' uncle Gubzy.

I will say it’s fucking stupid how some people compare this to blizzard making a phone game nobody wanted.
Yeah it's pretty funny, the mobile market and VR are on opposite ends of the hardcore faggotry spectrum; Everybody's got a phone, many people will have got them """free""" with their contract, most mobile games are are casual garbage with minimal gameplay so they can chisel money off you for more. VR is super niche, costs a pretty penny to get in, and most VR games are casual garbage with minimal gameplay because the devs know you don't want to barf on your toy that cost hundreds of dollars.

Wait, is horseshoe theory real?

I'm just hoping it does well enough to convince more companies that would actually have the resources to make great VR games to make VR games. Up till now your AAA shit has basically been limited to EA farting out a 5 minute advertising "experience" for some new Disney movie coming out, and it's been up to indies to do the innovation with slowly expanding early access titles.

What about Marc Laidlaw?

He still kinda works for valve. He’s currently helping the writers and answering questions they have. Same with Erik Wolpaw. Apparently the original script went through significant rewrites.

I wouldn't be surprised if Valve would continue to hire them on a freelance basis. They have the cash to do it; it's a matter of interest on the writers' part.

It's your money at the end of the day, but as @AnOminous pointed out it'd likely be discounted by the time you scrape together a rig to even play it.

Glad to hear he's still onboard in some capacity, I was worried he had burned some bridges when he leaked what Episode 3 might have been like.

Fuck man, it's just great to have Half-Life back, I understand people's hesitations about the VR aspect but I'm just so happy it's back at all, this says good things about the future of gaming if you ask me.

I also just love it in general when franchises return from long hiatuses.
