Half Life Alyx and Boneworks - The two VR games that dare to be different. Okay maybe just one, but still. AKA Floop’s shill thread.

Is VR the big gay?

The biggest problem is having the game calculate melee hit and impact, which Boneworks had a hard time doing.

Isn't there also something of a control issue where melee involves violent physical actions that could injure someone in reality if they were thrashing around doing this shit blind?

Again maybe my all ammo run ruined my brain but I think boneworks does a fine job of that.

Potentially, but every VR platform has a boundary system to show some representation of the real world within the headset, and unless you squeeze your boundaries right up to the wall during setup and turn the fade-in distance all the way down, or have spectators standing within your boundary (in which case any injury is totally deserved, fucking normies get out of my VR zone reeeeeee) you'll pretty much be fine.

Besides, other actions even in HL:A carry the pretty much the same risk, flinging props around and shit.

Just finished play it. It was fantastic, didn't get bored or tired of it either unlike Boneworks. It was comfortable to play while still providing some fun physics to mess around with and enjoyable combat.

I'm hyped for the next game, whenever that comes out. and I am okay if it's VR only as I enjoyed Alyx so damn much.
Don't know how I skipped this before, but unless it's a spin-off, no fucking way it should be VR only.

Edit: Seriously, anyone who believes that switching the whole series to VR exclusively is "okay" must be having some mental problems.

and where did valve say any future half-life games will be VR only?
Nowhere. That's not what I typed either. Let me make it more clear for you, because you seem to be "special". Gaylord says that he is okay with the next HL being VR exclusive too. I say that unless it's a spin-off, it shouldn't be one. Nothing hard to understand here.

Half Life Alyx actually looks really good and now I want a VR headset. Which ones are best/not overpriced and is there a good value-proposition that doesn’t involve Cuckerberg knowing everything that’s on my computer?

Windows Mixed Reality. Get a Samsung Odyssey+ if available, has come on sale for ~$230 before.

If you're talking about a Facebook acc requirement, it's only for Oculus. But good thing is that it's not necessary to have one, you can make and use Oculus account instead. As for a cheapest VR headset, WMR ones obviously.

So do you need one or not, and wouldn’t the Oculus account just do the same thing?

I just told you that it's not necessary, because you can go with an Oculus acc if you don't want a Facebook one. No idea if it will harvest your data, but if you don't want to risk, then there is no point in getting this brand's VRs.

If you want an Oculus but don't want every Tom, Dick and Harry on the planet to have your entire PC worth of personal information, you can disable it's telemetry pretty easily. This guide can walk you through setting up a firewall to block Oculus domains (which you can set alongside this list of known Facebook domains), deleting your logs, disabling any of the app's auto-run shit, and preventing any Unity assets from calling home.

VR is woefully exploited no matter which set you get. Valve and HTC have been very dodgy about their terms and what they collect, and the Windows stuff is as obnoxious about collecting data as Facebook is. The best way to avoid it is to use it on a second offline machine or not use it at all.

what you seem to fail to understand is that spinoffs is all you gonna get at this point, even alyx was an exception to push vr. there won't be a half-life 3 since it will be inevitably be shit. so when all future spinoffs are vr only, do you keep pissing your pants or just whine more for hl3?

You just need something to argue about for the sake of argument, don't you? Well, okay then. Of course I don't think that all possible spin-offs should be vr exclusives, even noted that only mentally ill would be fine with every next Half-Life game being strictly in vr now, but a spin-off and a long-awaited continuation of the story are on different levels of importance. Making the latter an exclusive for the virtual reality devices will be an utterly stupid and ignorant move that will cause a massive, albeit deserved shitstorm. Will VALVe make any more Half-Life games, will they make a sequel, when will they make them, whatever, the point still stands.
