I'm looking into ways to improve the way the forum handles when 100+ people are browsing threads at the same time. An idea I've had is to disable the mChat on the index page so people aren't constantly polling the system's largest database table without paying attention to it.

To access mChat (if you have it) go here: mchat.php (This is the same link given by the "Mini-Chat" in the upper right-hand side, which can be accessed on any page)

Re: Handling Slow Downs

You might want to make this a sticky at the top of the main page. If you haven't already.

MySQL server crashed. Couldn't handle the traffic intake.

Despite how lazy I am and what risks would carry into migrating the entire server and all files and database tables, I'm very seriously considering getting a new host. Linode was more expensive for basic services, but when you compare their VPS prices to what I spend now on Dreamhost's VPS Linode wins. Dreamhost is also having trouble handling our moderately sized forum which is ridiculous.

Edit: This database error was actually a follow-up with my request for a MySQL VPS. We'll see how things pan out.

Most users ever online was 131

There's quite a lot of users here currently.

You need to rotate the frequency and reverse the polarity of MySQL.

Very much this. I don't know if phpBB supports it though. Consider it if you move to linode (whose base plan gives you a healthy 1GB).

Hmmmm, yah. Who'd think one little Austic could generate so much traffic. I guess Chrissy can create good things after all :D

Along the lines of what Compy has said, I think he should optimize the https.
