🐱 Hannah Gadsby Has No Desire To Try And Talk To Ricky Gervais About His Trans Jokes: ‘He Doesn’t Seem Like A Nuanced Thinker’

CatParty

By now, everyone’s aware of how Dave Chappelle went back into trans-jokes mode during a 2021 Netflix comedy special, The Closer. Hannah Gadsby, whose Nannette was also a raging hit for the streamer, reacted by calling out Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos for an defending Chappelle to uphold the “amoral algorithm.” And Gadsby further commented upon “the hate and anger” that she receives from Chappelle fans because she dares to push back.

Fast forward to 2022, and Ricky Gervais decided to punch down, too, with his own new Netflix special, SuperNature, which he defended for its “taboo” nature and embracing of “freedom of expression.” In the process of that explanation, Gervais also declared, My target wasn’t trans folk, but trans activist ideology.” And during a new Hollywood Reporter interview to promote her upcoming new “feel-good” sets (referred to as Body Of Work), Gadbsy sounds like she’s not down to try and engage with Gervais, given the chance, like if they bumped into each other backstage somewhere:

“I’m the sort of person where it wouldn’t matter because people don’t talk to me. I really have a f*ck-off energy and I really enjoy it. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to talk to him because I just don’t think there’s any point. He’s made up his mind. He doesn’t seem like a nuanced thinker. I don’t think we could solve the issues backstage at an awards show. He’s set. There’s no changing his mind. So why bother?”
Fair enough. Choosing one’s battles wisely (and deciding not to expend the energy to do so when it won’t change matters) is a hell of a smart way to live. Hannah also doesn’t sound too interested in taking to Ted Sarandos, either. “He might be a little scared of me,” she offered to THR. “Rightly so, Ted. Rightly so. I’m just joking. It’s very funny, isn’t it? It’s a very funny situation.” Oh yes, it’s terribly funny.

Who likes this woman? She's the first "raging hit" that I've never heard a single person talk about.
It's probably been watched by the very progressive audiences of Netflix, but I'm sure the numbers were inflated. Remember when they turned off the ratings because they didn't want to offend Amy Schumer? They would very likely do the opposite for her.

Her whole schtick (every special she does) is “I’m autistic and I was raped”.
Like how does one make that less funny
If she was wearing that tuxedo, then it was very funny.

Wasn't her special called the anti-comedy special? If your comedy special is being complimented for not being funny, you're doing something wrong...

My Aussie friends have told me that no one there knows who she is. One day it just appeared in the news some lesbian no one had ever heard of was one of the country's top comedians, with a comedy special that isn't funny but getting critical acclaim. So then everyone in the media had to just jump onboard as if she was a thing.

It took me a minute to realize Hanna Gadsby isn't the DADS GOOGLE HISTORY chick, it's the I WAS RAPED (insert cacophonous laughter here) chick. Women comedians are already shit normally, but Australian felmale comedians are on a whole new level of terrible.

She's the idiot the neologism "claughter" was invented for.

For the record, I don't like Ricky Gervais. I do like a lot of his body of work but he leans pretty far Left with his IRL politics.

Having said that, for anyone to claim the man behind "Extras" is not a nuanced thinker is just Exceptional. What Mr. Gadsby means by "nuanced" is, of course, "willing to blithely accept my groundless and illogical assertions".

The funniest part of it was listening to actual comedians tear it to pieces.
link us to some

the 26% audience score doesn't surprise me, but that 100% of 49 critic reviews is alarm bells incarnate.

So when I go to click on the critic's reviews, they look like this:

some have scores easily visible, some don't. When I click on the "see whole review" link at the bottom of longer entries...

it links to a Guardian article fellating multiple unrelated programs at the same time. :story: Hannah isn't even the focus of this review, Dunkirk is front and center. Looking deeper:

There's two tiers of critics, the approved checkmark kind, and the lower "still official, but we just pull the shit they write on other sites" kind. :story:

Maybe you already knew how Rotten Tomatoes worked in depth, maybe this breakdown puts it into clearer perspective for you like it did me. I certainly think less of RT critic review now than before, half the time they're not even writing for RT specifically, so RT can astroturf whatever they want from unwilling critics who would have to be made aware and opt out. And they think audiences "review bombing" things is bad, this shit is pathetic.

Her special was a TED talk about herself.

The funniest part of it was listening to actual comedians tear it to pieces.
I second this assesment

And she also made jokes about breast cancer? Or am I confusing her for another unfunny lesbian

That was Tig Notaro or as the old O&A subreddit called her "Tits No-more-o" because she had to get a double mastectomy.

not this fat fucking pig again ffs I've taken shits that were funnier than this whale.

I am convinced I encountered this blimp at an inner Sydney bar I frequented for years in the early 2k's.
This Sasquatch waddles in & suddenly demands everyone bend to her will for the mere reason it apparently has a cunt lurking below that gunt.
