In hindsight I'm especially impressed on how shitty their coverage of the Langrisser series was back in the day.
I'll use IV for my example because I just finished playing it a week ago.
In general, Kurt here offers only the most basic overview of the actual gameplay here. While some of what's important to know about this game was done back in the intro for the entire series, he completely fails to mention how this game has, say, class trees that can let you play every character in different ways, or the fact that while the game is pretty damn hard at times, it's also very fair and feels rewarding when you can figure out how to beat a map.
I'm much more pissed on how fucking little he says about the story or characters.
Keep in mind the english fan translation for this game didn't exist yet, but I'd expect a website claiming to be about obscure games to have an article written by someone who's actually fluent in the language and actually played through the game entirely.
I know they didn't from the very first paragraph.
"They watch helpless as their friend, Rachel, is stolen away."
You mean their adopted sister, which the game tells you straight out several times.
"The plotline is far removed from the first three games, although it does tie together with Langrisser V."
Except that it actually follows on from the second game in all three possible routes. Granted the connection only becomes clear about halfway through, so I'm assuming Kurt didn't bother playing more than the beginning.
"Landis's friend refers to him as "aniue", a very respectful term for "big brother", although they aren't related."
Again, she calls him that literally because he is one of her adopted brothers. Not even going to commit on the shitty attempt at translating.
"Rachel also refers to Landis as her "oniichan" or "big brother", although it's meant to be more cutesy than out of respect."
Not only that, but she's actually more respectful towards Landius than she is to Ricky, so this is objectivly wrong and this motherfucker is a retard.
"A young princess, Angelina is a tough warrior who fights on a flying horse and is protected by fairies. Her and her sister travel along with a strategist named Wheeler - who is a total wuss, but you never get to control him anyway."
I mean unless you reclass her like I did into a foot solider, which I'm sure Kurt never did. Also Willer is actually just a polite, humble man who is very concerned about the safety of his friends and the common man, but I'd guess you'd have to play the game and actually understand what you are reading to figure that out.
"He's actually a cyborg (?!?!) who's lost his memory, and wants to unleash vengeance upon the person who turned him into such a monster.
Fairly accurate, but you also somehow forgot to mention he also angered about the disappearance of his sister, which is actually kinda a big fucking deal to his character arc, especially in V.
And that's entirely all he says bascially. He doesn't mention any other of the numerous interesting characters in the game like Giszarof, Lanford, Selena, Kreuger, Emily, Listell, King Caconis...
Nor does he mention how the plot is actually very interesting and much more plausible than a lot of other games of it's kind in the era. He also doesn't mention how IV improved on every character in your party having a unique voice and role in the story from III (which I mean that game is pretty excellent too but it really couldn't make everyone stick out like in this one since you have 10 and above playable characters for most of the game). And while he does mention how the romance elements introduced in III were brought over to this one, he fails to mention how this entry makes figuring out the right choices for the lady of your choice much more intuitive and natural.
Fucking worthless article, actually got more mad than I should rereading this. Fuck me though, this game (and the series it's attached too) is actually fantastic and deserve better though.
