The general vibe I get with the indie developer circle (Again, read Case II) is that they often piggy-back off of one another and really don't give that much attention to anyone or anything outside their bubble. One notable omission from that list is Hollow Knight, which almost instantly became an indie darling the year it came out.

Also, somehow Barkley: Shut Up and Jam Gaiden is covered in the book, despite it having jokes that would make HG101's writers shrivel up and die inside today.

So clarifying why I'm so certain of the New Jersey thing.... to be honest (and this was before I joined KF) I tried to dox the guy after a particularly negative encounter. Wthout retracing all my steps, basically I knew he was living (unmarried) with a woman who had given birth to his kids. So I just had to look for any Kurt Kalata who was living at the same address as that woman.

The address I found was in NJ, I wanna say it was Rockport or something.

I probably still have my findings on an external hard drive if you want me to look them up.

Ouch. As a resident Sonicfag, seeing these Shadow Hog posts is painful. For the record, Shadow Hog's previous work was on Sonic Robo Blast 2, a fangame (that honestly could get its own thread by this point with the degenerates involved) that's been in active development for 25+ years. Didn't know what he got up to after SRB2, could've probably gone the rest of my life not knowing. Sad to see that this is how he turned out.

Earlier in the thread I saw some people saying HG101 was "never edgy." Maybe not compared to some places, but I do remember they used to be not quite as uptight. For example one article (I believe the Valis one) used to have a joke about "glorious fanservice!" before they went all SJW and had to be po-faced about it.

This blogpost on the official HG101 blog by Discoalucard (Kurt Kalata) is about game stores in the NY/NJ area and speaks as if the author knows the area well.

HG101's own "About" page states specifically that its hosted in the US. I'm not sure if that proves anything.

...... Also searching "Hardcore Gaming 101 New Jersey" got me hits to stuff like LinkedIn where the blurb mentioned Kurt being in NJ or else that the site was hosted in NJ, but then when I clicked the link it required sign-in, so I'm not sure what that counts for.

By the way, while searching I found out the original Kontek version of HG101 is still up. This is basically HG101 before it got redesigned, but there are other neat things (and even what's up is in a state of decay so you may want to use the internet archive to go back further).

Most notably... I recall that when HG101 started publishing books, they actually removed articles from the site so that they could be book-exclusive, including articles that had been up since the beginning.

Unsurprisingly, his german interview is about as fun to read as the rest of his ‘content’. Gamefaqs is superior to this guy.

I kept getting pulled into other projects, and Atlus kept releasing new games or re-releasing old ones, so it was a struggle to keep up. Eventually with the help of some freelancers, I was able to pull most of it together

Take it with a grain of salt, it's a huge mess and I don't have a huge amount of firsthand details, just information from other long standing community members.

From what I understand, it's rooted in an incident involving the main SRB2 staff being made aware of a groomer (Sapheros) situation in the discord of another very prominent community member (Inazuma), either through DMs or normal activity. The moderation was understandably upset with this, and further pressed Inazuma as to why that was happening after he was explicitly upset about those DMs leaking. This lead to accusations of Inazuma also engaging in grooming acts, which lead to a whole mess in the community. This thread is one of the results of it, largely discussing the removal of the administration that levied these accusations.

Sometime later, another thread would emerge regarding the bans of two other community members. This one would have the current lead admin of the time (Wolfy) give further background on his side of the incident , and how the current staff made their way into their positions, largely due to them all being part of or adjacent to the modding group Kart Krew (coincidentally also a group full of progressive types).

As of the current state of the community, a lot of new modding rules are geared towards what's effectively a soft copyright over both code and art. The community mapping contest was first changed into a mapping collab, and then scrapped after the latest one was met with more derision than usual. Updates on development are both extremely sparse and now usually only on the discord server, along with them potentially redoing the level design for early zones AGAIN.
