What pisses me off about Hasan- far more than his community college-level politics- is that ten years ago nobody would’ve given him the time of day. Once upon a time, in order to be popular on the internet, you had to either be funny, be authentic, or have a vagina.

Hasan isn’t funny or charismatic- his voice sounds like he’s got half a burrito stuffed between his cheeks at all times and most of his content is bullshit reactions.

Hasan is also the fakest nigger on the internet. His politics are twitter bullshit, his background is steeped with nepotism and corporate meddling, and he doesn’t even try to hide it. He’s the definition of a rich kid.

His popularity, imo, is a testament to the sanitization of the internet. Zoomers are so used to squeaky clean corporate approved bullshit artists like Lindsay Ellis and hbomberguy that, to them, Hasan doesn’t trip any red flags. It’s actually sad.

I agree and think anyone on the internet should be able to say pretty much whatever they want, but unfortunately that opinion isn't too popular outside of sites like this.

If you want to police derogatory language you can't draw the line at some arbitrary point, its either all acceptable or none of it is. I used to hate Destiny in the bloodsports days but I do respect that he at least attempts to be logically consistent on this subject, even if I don't agree with him. With Hasan, Vaush, and 99% of lefty streamers consistency is never even considered, the only thing that matters is if their opinion gets them asspats from twitter commies.

I hate to be a wrestlefag right now but it's the only way I can think of to explain what's really going on here. In pro wrestling, there's a concept called "working yourself into a shoot" or in other words, peddling a LARP so hard that you get emotionally invested and actually start to believe it. Hasan was working his marks and making big payoffs, then he started working himself in the process. Now he's upset that he got hit cause unlike Twitter, Twitch is owned by a company that actually gives a shit about their bottom line. Couple that with the fact that we're currently between elections and you can see the whole picture. If it were 2024, he could call people crackers all day and night and nothing would happen, but right now, racially slurring Amazon's biggest customer base and probably majority of investors is just bad for business.

I guess Hasan forgot that freedom of speech doesn't apply to private platforms and doesn't mean freedom from consequences. Twitch gave him chances to get off easy, even deleting his VODs from the past few days, but he didn't realize they were doing this to protect him and he decided to die on the hill of "insulting people on the basis of skin color is not racism".

If you don't wanna read Twitter for obvious reasons, here's a run-down of some common defenses of Hasan I've seen:

• Cracker, a term originally used to refer to white slaveowners, and is now used exclusively to refer to white people, is not racially-prejudiced when used as an insult.
• Calling someone a cracker isn't offensive because it refers to people with institutional power, even if said power is seen as immoral by society (in other words, it's like saying that insultingly calling a German a Nazi isn't offensive because Nazis held institutional power)
• It is impossible to be racist against white people because the only kind of racism that exists is systemic racism.
• White people deserve to be insulted and antagonized for the actions of their ancestors they had no say in.
• Hasan is white (when it's convenient), so he's allowed to call other white people crackers. Some people are comparing this to how it's OK for black people to say "nigga". However, I think a better comparison would be how black people are allowed to call other black people coons when they have different political beliefs, the same thing Hasan was doing with calling people crackers.
• Everyone who is offended from being called a cracker is a racist white guy who goes out of their way to justify saying "nigga" every chance they get.
• Everyone who is offended from being called a cracker is a Redditor who goes out of their way to justify calling people retarded every chance they get.
• Cracker only refers to "the bad ones" and if you're offended that includes you (this is a common defense of any antagonizing blanket statement against a demographic when it starts getting backlash).
• If you say cracker is a racial slur, you're automatically saying that it's just as offensive as other racial slurs with different, more harmful contexts used against different people.
• No one is offended from being insultingly called cracker ever, despite Hasan being banned for exactly that.
• If all else fails, just keep calling detractors crackers until they leave.

As someone who is white and find the ban on Hassan to be overkill and unnecessary, you are absolutely right that Twitch has the right to do this. As a private company, as long as they don't break federal anti-discriminatory laws, they have free reign to suspend or ban anybody for little reason because as a streamer, he's basically an independent contractor who has much less rights as workers than employees do.
