I didn't know Maddox lived in Japan for a while.
 
What I'm finding the most odd is the fact that there seems to be little to no other English information about this. No articles, no blog posts, not even any Youtube videos-at least none that I can find. You'd think something this big would've garnered international attention.

Search for articles on things like Facebook usage in Japan.

There are other cultural reasons, and just the fact that Mixi and LINE are more popular, but lack of anonymity is a major reason people don't use it.

You can also try looking at Japanese Twitter usage. A lot of Japanese Twitter users keep their profiles private, and those that don't typically use aliases and don't post pictures of themselves.

A relatively recent example of something like this was Japanese artist lolicept (note: he drew true and honest big titty hentys, not lolis, honest) basically deleting his internet presence out of fear of people actually tracking him down irl because he made a crass joke.
