Science Hate the smell of BO? You might be xenophobic.

Bizarre study finds people who are sensitive to disgusting smells are more likely to have negative attitudes towards migrants

Bizarre new research claims that people with a sensitive nose for disgusting smells are more likely to be xenophobic.

In a study across nine countries, scientists have linked a repulsion to sweat, bad breath and smelly feet with heightened disliking for refugees.

Steering clear of stenches is a natural mechanism that helps us avoid illnesses, experts at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm explain.

But when working into overdrive, this may trigger hostility towards refugees who they suggest can be perceived as having 'dissimilar' hygiene and food habits.

'Individuals more easily disgusted by body odours are also more prone to having negative attitudes towards refugees,' the scientists wrote.

'As in previous work prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, this relationship was partially explained by the perceived dissimilarity of the outgroup in norms relating to basic practices such as food preparation and hygiene.'

Nearly 7,000 participants took part in the study which examined opinions across the UK, New Zealand, Canada, Nigeria, Kenya, Hong Kong, Chile, Italy and Sweden.

When assessing body odour sensitivity, participants were asked to rank scents on a one-to-five scale of perceived disgustingness.

Human smells like sweat, urine, feet, gas, breath, upper body sweat and faeces were included in the survey.

These were incorporated into different scenarios such as: 'You are alone at home and notice that your feet smell strongly', and 'you are sitting next to and notice that their feet smell strongly'.

A fictional scenario was then used to assess attitudes towards a fictional group known as the 'Drashnean refugees'.

Researchers posed a situation in which the Drashnean group from Eastern Africa or Eastern Europe had been experiencing a 'great deal of civil unrest in the recent years'.

They explained: 'As a result of these conditions, many people from this country are trying to leave.

'A large number of these refugees are seeking to immigrate to your country.'

Participants then answered numerous questions about the group, taking into account food, hygiene and sanitary practices.

One question asked how much they 'agree that Drashneans could bring health-related problems' into the country, while another looked at potential criminality.

The results revealed that the participants who scored highly for sensitivity to disgusting smells were more likely to have negative attitudes towards migrants.

Experts claim that their results support 'a theoretical notion of how pathogen avoidance is associated with social attitudes'.

They said: 'This main finding was observed in a diverse sample from nine countries across the globe and was similar for attitudes toward refugees from Eastern Africa and Eastern Europe.

'Our results support the theoretical notion that traditional norms provide protection against pathogens and that outgroups are viewed negatively in part because they are viewed as challenging these norms.'

Is this what they consider to be xenophobia?

I mean, that's kind of an objective issue, and it does not have to do with their origin as much as with their situation.

Poor people with nothing coming from a shit country. Yeah, I expect health issues and criminality. It's not rocket science to make this connexion.

If they come from Eastern Europe, I am sure there will be some good ones too. I am not stuck on the fact that they are from another country. But it does not stop me either from seeing the potential issues.

The title is pretty poorly worded because the research itself is kind of interesting. It's not so much "noticing bad smells is racist, bigot" as the article seems to wanna imply and people in this thread immediately assumed but "people who are more sensitive to bad smells are more likely to be concerned about hygiene". So if you are asked about migrants coming into your country and potentially your neighborhood, whether from east Africa or eastern Europe and especially from a country that is in a state of "civil unrest" and thus likely a bombed-out ruin, you are more likely to be worried that they are going to be bringing diseases with them.

It's just that they desperately wanted to tie it into migration attitudes and shit so you get the click-bait title.

I can confirm that Chinese people in particular can be incredibly stinky. Though I think it's a question of what they eat and hygiene, like anything else.
That said I have experienced people with that non-BO gene that can go days of camping without showering and only have the lightest of BO.
Diet and hygiene are definitely huge players . The biggest issue is a lot of BO isn't necessarily from "you" but the biome of myriad microorganisms that interact with your skin, excrete all over it, and eventually die on it. This is largely a symbiotic and positive relationship with their humie-hosts but just like your own dead skin cells sometimes the corpses need some help getting scraped away. If you leave it there to degrade, especially if it is warm/moist, you're going to release volatile compounds. The very characteristic ones humans can reliably categorize as good/bad, if not directly identify, are commonly known as Aromatics. Note that these mutants you know still have a slight level. Mistaking this for elimination and being gross as a result often gets them exotic and even stronger BO.
Also I wonder what the gene is that makes some white people smell like wet dog in the rain.
I was way too fucking old before I realized a huge proportion of "black people smell" was their hair and whatever the fuck they do to it. I would imagine whatever oils/secretions makes white peepo hair different plays a big part in that smell. Wash it regularly and you really have to try and notice it. Crunchy types generally exude it and throw patchewy (spelling?) on top.

If you consider how humans and dogs evolved, particularly whites (real humans), it would make sense for there to be a very similar au naturale smell. Also anecdotally supporting my theory: I've always been told dandruff shampoo is what you use on dogs when they don't need like flea shampoo. Also black people get "ashy" instead of dandruff. Also while it is definitely characteristic, mild cases strike me as a more natural smell like when earth really smells right before rain. Nigger hair is some kind of chemical/danger smelling shit.

Wypipo don't spice they bodies

Lmao they’ll look for anything to pin on raycissm won’t they?

I don’t care if you’re white, black, brown or whatever color, if you stink, you offend me. Back in my retail days I’d sometimes have to pull an employee aside and let them know complaints had been made about their body odor. The white ones would usually be super embarrassed, a couple to the point of crying, but they’d mostly fix it. The ones that didn’t were your typical fatshit autists, and they were either written up or let go for stinking up the joint. The couple of times it was a black dude or a pajeet that was accused of being smelly were interesting. Black guy would get belligerent and start his dindunuffins routine, but he’d come back to work clean and smelling nice. Pajeet acted like I was speaking gibberish when I said he needed to shower before coming to work. Go figure

May be necessary for romancing white women.

Now I need to know if I have this.
Hear my story. I heard in college that daily shampoo hurts the hair. I tried going a few days without any shampoo. My hair got oily and wiry. Looked gross. Then, after 3 days or more, it balanced itself. Smooth, soft, with a gentle shine. Beautiful and comfortable. A few days later, it rained. I reeked of wet dog.
Maybe you could find similar results.

I'm not gonna try this again unless I decide to live as a hermit.

Nah I've just been going to anime cons for way too long.

well to be fair, pajeet food often has components that make their way into the sweat glands. Stuff like Asafoetida. I shit you not. Other spices to varying degrees, although not all of them smell "bad".

It's interesting that so many traits follow the Black -> White -> Asian (or reverse) pattern. The huwhite race finds itself in the middle by so many measures:

Body odour potency
Penis size
Ass size
Athletic ability
IQ
Ability to delay gratification
Testosterone
Criminality
Fatherlessness
Brain size
Birth canal size

I can think of some exceptions but it's interesting nevertheless. The patterns really do lend themselves well to the penis-brain trade off theory.
