I've volunteered at a wildlife clinic for 4 or 5 years now, I love animals so it's a pretty exciting job. It's amazing how many different species of birds alone we have in this area. I feel like I'm getting paid in knowledge, also sometimes you can score free food in the breakroom. (I got free dolmas recently, that was pretty awesome)

Let’s be real here though. Some more than others am I right?
Nope, I’ve seen 50/50. Black, whites, men, women, republicans, democrats, Christians. The only people I didn’t see abusing the system were atheists…. Mostly likely since I live in a red county and the town folks would hang them for being “heathens”.

You didn’t mention the Jews you dirty anti-semite.

I'd like to do some charity work, but every organization I look into seems like a scam of some kind, and/or looks ripe for abuse by the very people it means to help.

I wish there was a charity for checking up on the elderly in nursing homes and making sure they're being taken care of well. The people lost in that system seem particularly vulnerable, and not likely to even be able to exploit anyone.

When I was still living in L.A. I volunteered to numerous events so i can attend for free. It was fun. You don't get paid, but you get to be behind the scenes to a lot of stuff.

I gave blood about a million times, havent in over a year because there are only ugly bitches left at my local place and i cant be asked to look at some fatass waddling around for 30 minutes...

I walked dogs almost for a local animal shelter for years, now just from time to time. I love dogs and cant have one at home right now.

I also did some habitat restauration for animals while in university but i think that was technically paid work since we got beer, food and special credits university credits for it.

I once helped run a charity, at management level. It lasted a few years and I quit mainly because of politics shit and whiny bratty behavior from some of the other people on it. I figured it just wasn't worth it when it was no easier or more enjoyable to deal with than real business and clients who actually pay you so they can be bratty and whiny to you.

I volunteer for abused kids. Sometimes I do crisis line work. Sometimes I’m just the nice lady that plays games & hands out snacks before the child forensic interview. I spend about $150 buying children toys for local kids every year. I volunteer in my church nursery. I also do other things - some big, some small. I give 10% to my church as well.

I’ve been thinking of doing meals for hospice care with my family on Sunday but haven’t committed because of scheduling - and the hospice place didn’t seem keen on kids (I have young kids.)

Anyway, if you’re not volunteering with a charity you love - you’re doing it wrong. It makes you happier, makes you feel connected, and sets a good example for your kids (if you have any.) That’s not to mention the good it does for others. I usually recommend you do it local instead of some global charity.

Donated alot of blood and I'm part of experimental bio-drug program where they take my t-cells

Worked at food banks
Did some hurricane Harvey charity work

Don't ever talk about it irl because I feel like I'm bragging, but I'm anonymous here, so who cares

To graduate high school in my area you need to do 100+ hrs of community service after school. (Which frankly is bullshit and fucked up to expect kids to have so much time in their lives outside of school to do more school). I worked at the food pantry sorting and packing up boxes to distribute. It was boring but they didn't let you choose what free labor you had to do.

other than that, I just donate to the local animal shelter here and there. After my cat died I was too sad to get another cat right away so I gave them money and pet some cats at the shelter to feel better.

Volunteered security/stewarding for a bunch of feminist events in case of brigading by feral troons.
It's been a while since I did any regular volunteering. I graduated in the middle of the recession and was on the dole for six months before I got any work, so between applying for jobs I volunteered in a charity shop. It was retail but it was less shitty than most retail jobs I think, the customers were mostly young families and old people and they were all friendly. We got first dibs on anything that came in, so I found some decent cheap books and shirts, and all sorts of weird old stuff got donated. There was an autist who worked there with the help of a wrangler, he liked to talk about classic rock and tell ghost stories, which were generally variations on "see that building over there? Yeah, that's got ghosts." He was really good at methodically tagging things.
I mostly arranged the books and DVDs and things. We got a lot of romance novels that we'd price cheaper because they were quite short and they rotated pretty fast: old ladies would buy them for 50p, read them and then donate them the next week and buy a different one, so each one would get sold many times over. I thought they were just love stories or soap opera sort of things until I actually read a bit of one. It was filthy as owt! And really badly written. The whole shelf was like Tumblr erotic fanfic, but aimed at old people. I had no idea.

I volunteered at a literacy center, Special Olympics, food bank, cooked dinner for the homeless spending the night at the church, volunteered in my kids' schools (answering phones, teacher's helper, chaperone, band boosters, organizing fundraisers, etc.), helped run a girl scout troop and volunteered with the boy scouts, did Habitat for Humanity a couple of years.

I used to donate blood (my blood was good for babies because it was negative for some kind of disease, can't remember what) but I started taking medicine that makes me not a good donor anymore so I had to stop doing that. I also used to volunteer for political campaigns, but I hate all politicians now so I don't do that anymore.

If you have the time, I recommend it. It feels good to make even a small difference in the world.

I tried to do some voluntary work once. But it took about two years to get criminal record checked, like. Had to have a DNA test to make sure I hadn't raped anyone. Had to have a credit check, which I failed. Anyone with less than five fucking million in the bank is suspected of only applying for voluntray work to take advantage of little old ladies. I'm still waiting for my DBS to come through. Disclosure and barring system. It's a hoot.

In the mean time, we get specimens like this:
