I was checking up on the kiwi farms thread on Gen Zed, and god damn, are Hayden Black’s tweets about lesbians (and tweets in general) awful or what?
Prepare for a salt mine.
First off, They’re repetitive and insulting. They’re all in three flavors and three flavors only: “Lesbians are hot”, “Lesbians are icky”, and “ew men that look like lesbians”. I’m not even getting offended at the way he says he likes seeing the girl on girl action because that’s his thing, I don’t give a shit. But it’s the fact he says things likes that he masturbates to the thought of a kid’s mothers having sex, he wants to “convert” a lesbian, or that he wants to creep on a lesbian friend and not only expects people to not be disgusted, but to laugh. Then the next minute, he’s going on about how eeeeew ugly icky lesbians are. The reality is that it’s sickeningly creepy, and nothing funny about it. I’m not even lesbian and it sickens me. It comes off like he only cares about lesbians when they can be hot and sexy for him, but the second they refuse a threesome or to let him watch or aren’t pretty enough, they’re all ugly hags who probably can’t love anyways. I never thought I’d say this, but it’s incredibly objectifying. It’s like those fujoshi who go on about how THE HAWT YAOEES ARE THE BEST!!!1! KAWAII!!! but the second they see a real gay man, they’re grossed out because they don’t live up to their expectations and are thus gross. Even if I could look past the sheer offensiveness, there aren’t any jokes to find. You can’t just say “I like to fap to the gay women” and expect people to bust a gut. There needs to be something funny about it that makes it not just a statement, but a joke. That’s where Black fails.
Most of the jokes he writes are really shitty, to be honest. Not as in “YOU FSHITLOARD I AML ACN OFENDED”, but just… bad. They’re all insults or just a set up, with no punchline. I can’t talk about bad jokes because mine are awful, too, but I’m not a professional being paid for this shit. There’s a responsibility when you want to be a professional comedian, to know what is funny and how to make a good joke, not just throw a bunch of insults and claim it’s a joke. I don’t watch South Park, but I feel that’s the difference between Gen Zed and South Park: South Park makes jokes and actual commentary, so that somewhere between laughing your ass off or being disgusted, you sit and think, “Hey, maybe they’re right. Never thought of it before.” Gen Zed? There’s nothing to laugh at, there’s nothing to get from it. It’s kind of like how a guy I knew described how Family Guy was only funny when baked: “Ha ha, he’s fat. Ha, he fell”. There isn’t anything to see as clever, it’s just an avalanche of pop references with no thought behind them. It’s just, “Hurrr this woman is ugly and I would not have sex with her”.
But that’s not my only problem with Gen Zed. Oh no, I have more beef than just shit writing and a total douche being the creator.
They’re trying to make a big deal about how their voice actress is the “first trans actress in a lead role!”, too, which isn’t right. First, there’s the previously mentioned Maddie Blaustein. You might say she doesn’t count since she only voiced Meowth who “isn’t a lead”, but here’s the thing. Meowth was a lead, even if he was an antagonist. He played an important part in most episodes. You could also say she doesn’t count because she was intersex, but I still say she counts. That’s not the issue here. The issue here is that Gen Zed’s staff tried to say she wasn’t really in a lead role and thus didn’t count. Not only that, but the fact that now they’re trying to backpedal on her and go “Ahaha, um, well she’s actually a… a huge inspiration!” instead of just sucking it up and admitting that they were wrong disgusts me. They’re trying to use her name for their own gain, it feels, and it really rubs me wrong. Ms. Blaustein was a person, not just some name you can use to win an argument or say wasn’t actually there. The way they namedrop her makes me sick, especially considering that she put her heart and soul into her roles.
There’s also the matter of Shona’s character. Do I have a problem with the fact she’s transgender? Hell no, she’s a person and that shouldn’t matter. But it’s the way that everything about her is all about her gender. She has no real interests, it’s just “TRANSGENDER TRANSGENDER TRANSGENDEEEEEEEEER”. I already salted about the fact she has a Leelah Alcorn poster which implies someone is capitalizing on the suicide of a young woman, but there’s also how it just forces it down the audience’s throat. It feels like it’s trying to drive home that she’s transgender, and I strongly dislike that. It feels like she’s not human. Give her goals, interests besides gender. Maybe she’s a comedian that likes horror movies and collects porcelain dolls, she has posters of comedians and trans women who inspire her in her room, she has notebooks and notebooks of jokes and skits that she’s written. I’d be fine with that, and you know why? Because she’s a person there. She has interests and idols like most people, with the added struggle of being transgender, but she won’t be pulled down by it. But the way she is now, it feels like it’s identity first, character second.
Even the jokes center around Shona’s gender, and one in particular really got me pissed: The scene where one character tells her “No pun intended, but that takes balls.” Do you realize that that could, if Shona were a real person, trigger her dysphoria? Do you not realize that this, among other things, could really alienate many transgender viewers? This show, that claims to have a transgender character and is clearly trying to appeal to transgender people, would offend so many with jokes like this.
All of the characters are one note stereotypes, not just Shona. Instead of being, to pull names and others out of a hat, about Gyeong, the rich music lover who desperately wants to break her drug habit; Rich, the bodybuilder who’s insecure about his body as can be; Tomas, the soft hearted aspiring rapper and programmer; and Fionnuala, the comedian and artist with a heart of gold and a family that tries their hardest to understand her; we get Asian Pill Popper Freeloader, I Can’t Believe It’s Not the Meme Wrestler, Black Guy, and Transgender woman. They have no hopes, no interests. They’re just their race and gender. There’s nothing interesting in that, to me. The subjects the characters deal with aren’t handled well, either. The trustafarian’s drug habit is treated very casually, like there’s nothing wrong, for example. That’s just one example of many places where things should be taken seriously. A serious issue is just treated as a harmless joke. The dialogue also feels very stiff and unnatural, like someone who has no experience with humans just tried to write some sentences. The jokes, like Hayden Black’s jokes (And Hayden Black in general) all fall flat. You can’t tell whether to laugh or cringe. Is “Depeche Road” intentionally bad? Is it supposed to be good? You don’t know, so you don’t laugh. If the characters showed any reaction to the jokes, like, for example, Shona cringing at trustafarian’s jokes, it might be better. As it is, it’s just painful.
Then there’s the animation. The only thing I can think of is the animation in the Zelda CD-i games (Gen Zeld?). It’s very stiff and the colours are very garish. The faces look melted as well, and none of the characters look human. It’s a shame, because looking at the animator’s other work, he can do better. His digital art is very beautiful, and even his other animation is pretty good. But for Gen Zed, it looks like he didn’t care. It’s very cheap looking, and also incredibly uncomfortable. No effort or thought went into it, it looks like. It looks like he just took the money and ran.
But who am I kidding? We all know the real purpose of Gen Zed. It’s not to be entertaining, or show transgender people as humans, or anything, really. It’s just a cheap attempt to get famous and stroke the creator’s massively inflated ego by capitalizing on whatever flavor of the month political issue is hot and then using the gender identity of their voice actress as a get out of jail card when confronted with the fact that people see right through this. Over all, it really is a sad excuse for anything besides what it is: A shameful, exploitative cash grab. It treats the audience like a bunch of fools who’ll lap up any shit served their way, and gets insulted when they don’t. The staff’s egos are gargantuan, with one lead voice actress and the creator himself getting very bitchy when criticized, and disrespecting any potential audience. People that aren’t driven away by in show writing will be by Black’s repulsive personality. But we all know Hayden doesn’t care about entertaining people or giving acting roles to transgender people. He only cares about his sweet, sweet profits from this show, from its merch, from donations from naive people who want to see characters like them. Disgusting.
In between the creator’s awful, offensive “jokes”, inaccurate marketing, and all around poor execution, there’s many reasons that I won’t give Gen Zed the time of day or my money.
TL;DR: Hayden Black is an absolutely disgusting asshole who only cares about the sexy lesbians, his show is poorly written, and the main “selling point” of the show - having the first transgender in voice actress in the history of anything ever - isn’t even right. It’s a scam made by a scumbag to make money, and that’s all it ever was or will be.
(Also, in case this ends up capped and put on the thread: Hello. Thanks for making it through all of this bitterness)
