They are probably all fresh blood which is a shame because of all the recently laid off animators there are. Low pay is a term that needs some context and I agree that it's not very clear. Generally speaking, the big studios in California came together years ago and flat rated the entire industry. Your experience and your skill could not help you negotiate your wages. My guess is that this team was being paid below the flat rate standard. I also imagine that they are being paid similarly to rates in Japan, which sucks.
