I don't watch this show and have no intention of doing so, but lorewise there are descriptions of all of these specific demons in the Ars Goetia/Lesser Key of Solomon and many of them are described as having chimera-like animal heads or bodies. In some ways the Ars Goetia is like a 17th century pokedex because it's formatted as a list of names, descriptions, and sigils of these stupid looking demonic critters who are thought to be fallen angels that control legions in Hell.
Considering that Orthodoxy (oldest church on the planet)teaches that Christ actually went down to hell and beat the shit out of Satan so that he could drag Adam up to heaven as forgiveness for his sins, this really feels /extra/ sinful...
The show is particularly weird in this respect. Having Stolas depicted as an owl is quite clever, because that maps pretty well with how he's depicted in the Ars Goetia. But why the fuck is Beelzebub, which is supposed to be a grotesque monstrosity, instead a generic furry OC that only vaguely alludes to the "lord of the flies" title?

There's a theory that the demons in the Ars Goetia are all corruptions of older pagan deities (the most obvious ones being Bael/Ba'al and Amon) Beelzebub is sometimes thought of as a corruption of one of these called "Ba'al Zebul" or "lord of the high place". Though in practice these guys were probably just inserting their weird gay furry porn into that particular character apropos of nothing. I think there are a lot of old deviantart niggers who used to be cataloged on Encyclopedia Dramatica that made elaborate self-insert fanfics about their furfag OCs, sometimes making them gods and other stupid shit like that. I remember reading an ED page about this specific highly elaborate one like 15 years ago that involved m-preg nagas for some insane reason.

My understanding is that the "lord of the flies" nickname was originally supposed to be an insult based on his name, i.e the flies were buzzing around him like they do around shit, so it's just an elaborate way of calling him a massive turd by twisting his name slightly. Some kind of pun where the original meaning got lost over time through lack of context.
There's also Belphegor or Ba'al Peor, referenced in the old testament and supposedly worshipped through defecation on his idol. There's a lot of really bizarre stuff for fetishists to run wild with.

The japs really do love their edgy demons and stuff, yeah. Though I find the mythology of these things to be very fascinating as a whole. It's technically a 15th century Catholic legal text intended for the purpose of witch hunting, but the Malleus Maleficarum is a goldmine if you're into obscure lore on witchcraft, paganism, and demons. Some really wild stuff to be found in that book whether you believe in any of it or not.
Well I used to like to think that the forms they take are a product of some mutations caused as a byproduct of being in hell, causing them to take on chimeric forms often reflecting the nature of their sins/death. For instance, Angel Dust is a spider-ish creature because his family was involved in a "web of crime". Angel's entire in-universe explanation for his design is a shitty pun.
