I can clearly picture, just from all the soy looking leads of Dev companies, how they leave the meeting with the cutthroat Sony negotiator, with their pants around their ankles.

When you consider how much more leverage and how many more options a Dev studio has compared to a director trying to make a movie, and somehow they end up with worse deals.

Nope, their first step should have been to immediately shitcan those CMs publicly if they wanted anyone to believe they had a spine. This is a half assed attempt to quell the fires so it leaves the focus of the internet outrage machine. I'm perfectly fine with this nuclear level response for simply an announcement, as it should serve as a warning to anyone retarded enough to try this shit.

Ghost of Tsushima comes out in 12 days on Steam. Considering how often GoT sits in a high placing on the annual "most played" listings for PSN, Sony really doesn't want this inferno to keep flickering in the corner of everyone's eye when GoT comes out. Everyone is going to think "PSN link required for just the MP section of the game? How long until they make the SP require PSN too?"

They already had their opportunity to learn when their community lead, Katherine Baskin (Baskinator), was causing problems in March. She's still around and they haven't learned their lesson. Strike 2 was pulling this shit with PSN. Strike 3 was not showing cultural appreciation to their recent refugees like proper Swedes and beheading the faggot CM in a style reminiscent of the ISIS videos.

TBH I think the people using their discord as a place to organize raids of unrelated shit like the tekken tournaments on twitch should be given the boot from there.

Why did they sell their own IP in the first place?

Do developers even need publishers? Is it genuinely difficult for them to secure angel investors or utilize crowdfunding? Do they struggle with an overregulated, monopolized industry that makes operating without publishers extremely challenging?

Crowdfunding for games is comparably easier than for other media, and distribution doesn't necessarily require a publisher.

I'm a 'publishers are parasites and should be eradicated' kinda guy, but you don't have to go that far. Considering the numerous funding options available to developers and the minimal benefits publishers offer, negotiating favorable terms should be straightforward.

Another indicator of publishers being parasites is that in the past, developers served as their own publishers. And many highly successful games to this day don't have a publisher.
