I listened to the audiobook while commuting this last summer. It was different than I expected but very good. If anyone hasn’t read it, I’d highly recommend adding it to your reading list.

Essentially, it’s got short action sequences with longer discussions on morality and ethics and how society should be structured. Totally different than the movie (I enjoyed both in their own way).
That's literally the whole point of the book. You throw it to a 13 year old kid, sucker him in with the battles, and then ask him to think about what did he just read. Does he agree with the federation? What are the pros/cons of their gov system? Etc.

I thought the best part of the book is the classroom discussion of how society used to allow kids to do whatever they want without proper repercussion, to the point where public areas were no longer safe to patronize and how the current students were mortified at the idea of people back then not being lashed for their behavior. Sounds scarily familiar.
That’s the part I think about often. I watch a few bodycam videos and see the parallels. It would be nice to be able to discipline 13% or so of the population.

I kinda wish my teachers had forced me to read this book in freshman or sophomore year. It would have made good discussion and it probably would have saved me a short but embarrassing stint on the left.

Biggest tells to know someone didn't read it, is them thinking "service" is only in the military despite the book saying other. Moreso with its example of the disabled guy having a non military role found for him so he can do something that is useful.
Second tell and most importantly, the military including the mobile infantry was always volunteer only even in the face of possible extinction of mankind.

You also gotta read between the lines that the Fed thought Johhny (while well meaning) was kindof too stupid to do anything else. Off to the MI you go!

The Japs made a pretty good adaptation in the late 80s (nailed what the suits would look like) with some trippy as hell bugs

I think of it as his mental exercise in the opposite direction of Stranger In A Strange Land, which was also a good book. The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress is up there too.

why is everyone so fucking BAD AT THIS GAME
I tried playing it on my steamdeck. Surprisingly good. But I also learned that playing this game on controller is awful lmao. Turn off crossplay if you want some good players.

Kiting the bugs is not hard and taking cover from the bots is not hard. Problems arise when botdivers try to take cover from the bugs and bugdivers try to kite the bots.
i'd feel lucky to have some randos not be sure which front they're on. if 2 randoms are needed any retard that joins is one of the following:
- RUN IN CIRCLE niggers
- WON'T FUCKING SHOOT ANYTHING niggers
- COLLECTING 20 SAMPLES ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MAP THEN DYING niggers
- WASTING RESUPPLY niggers
- WASTING REINFORCEMENT niggers
- CHINESE niggers
- NIGGERS WITH OPEN MIC ON
- WON'T SHOOT THE HULK niggers
- WON'T SHOOT THE CHARGER niggers
- NAPALM BARRAGE 10M AWAY teamkilling niggers
- SENTRY RIGHT BEHIND YOU teamkilling niggers
- 500K 10m in front of you teamkilling niggers
- LANDING ON YOU teamkilling niggers

My favorite little part of the book is where it's pontificating that every human should have a well rounded skillset in contrast to the bugs' overspecialization.
- NAPALM BARRAGE 10M AWAY teamkilling niggers
- SENTRY RIGHT BEHIND YOU teamkilling niggers
- 500K 10m in front of you teamkilling niggers
- LANDING ON YOU teamkilling niggers
I played with some internet fwens on voice com the other day and we had all of that happen by accident (napalm teamkills were all at the very edge of radius though) but at least we were able to laugh about it knowing we're not actually retarded.

Napalm barrage teamkills are an inevitably. NOBODY can properly judge the radius of that thing.

I have a conspiracy theory that Sony actually hates Helldivers because it BTFO's literally everything they've released for the last like decade.
My proof is the lack of support from Sony proper and my dreams.

Any crossover with WH40K is just going to be utter full blown retardation by the space marines and imperial guard fanbois.
Fuck you, I wanna go kill some heresy.

Frankly, crossovers like some are entertaining in the thread would be bad. Helldivers isn't Fortnite. How would you even integrate a crossover into Helldivers like that without totally tacking it on like a tumorous mass? I wouldn't mind some equipment making its way over. A Morita in Helldivers would be cool, new superearthified armors from these other franchises. And we really need new voices in general. But turning the game into a fortnite warhammer 40k crossover would be an unmitigated autistic maelstrom. The other issue is that Helldivers has pretty much direct competitors in both Warhammer 40K and Starship Troopers with their own games. It seems to me that this would make it less likely for the IP owners to all play super nice with each other to arrange this.
I don't care about the lore or whatever. The bots are terminator's and the bugs are nids. Have a black hole planet where everyone can have fun for a month then put the genie back in the bottle or something.
