So there's this book I remember from when I was a kid, and I remember enjoying the hell out of it. It might even have been a series of 2 books, my memory is hazy. Anyway, key plot points: It takes place in a post apocalyptic world where people are hunted by giant metal birds that breath fire. When one of these birds gets destroyed or crashes or something it's filled with a red hot orange gel that's supposedly the fuel for the fire weapons. It had real "War of the Worlds" vibes too it, but no I haven't gotten it confused with that because I remember reading War of the Worlds not long afterwards because my school librarian gave me the "If you liked that you'll love this" speech about it. Now I remember the title as being "The Firebirds" but a casual google reveals about a million books with that title and casual rooting around with vague plot details in google yields no result. If anyone can remember this book/books please for the love of god tell me as it's driving me mad.

Are they literally birds or is "firebirds" some kind of metaphor for warplanes or some other form of machincery?

Set in a post apocalyptic world, but was it set on Earth? What about time period? Can you recall any other details to pin down the setting?

Do you remember anything else about the orange fuel or the metal birds?

Here's some mildly entertaining BS I found while searching for your book:

I get that "book giant metal birds full of orange gel energy source" was a shitty search input, but come on.
