My father has a theory that people who identify with the Irish, people who make their Irish ancestry a part of their identity, are insane. In my experience that's correct much more often than not.

There's a really cringey BBC show (every country probably has a version) that has C list celebs trace their ancestors and then cry about them. Every episode is a 50/50 bet: Irish or Russian Jewish. Often both, even the blacks and Asians. I'm an Elvis Costello certified whigger but now I reckon great granny was a Romanov.
I agree with OP: this shit is for faggots and washed up TV actors.

Edit: just realised who OP is and how he somehow fucked my Russian Jewish grandmother.

To be bluntly honest, I've always thought being proud of your heritage is the same as pride of your race or gender: you were born with it, you can't change it, and you should focus on improving yourself rather than standing on the shoulders of giants. You can find great people and evil people from every background. Plus all those DNA tests always reveal that even the whitest people are like 2% sub-saharan African so you'll always be a dumb nigger.

I've always found it really autistic/retarded that people think that:
1. Being proud of your group is the same thing as trying to take credit for its achivements
2. Being proud of a group means looking down on every other group
3. You can only, apparently, be proud of one thing

But, I blame that on a decline in normal human interaction and social institutions making people too individualistic.

Lol, the BBC.

We definitely had a version in the states. Some faggot found his ancestors owned slaves and because current year he got assblasted over it, demanded it not air, and he basically got the show cancelled iirc

I would watch that. If it was a particularly woke individual, the confused self loathing would be hilarious

Some members of my family do that with being southern/"country". They came over to Cali because of the dust bowl, fast forward to the Boomers and Gen Xers and they're still trying to act like they're "country".
People that do that "Southern/Country pride" thing are just as fucking weird in the South. I mean it's common enough, I just find it really weird, but then I'm an outsider looking in, I guess.

Still, I probably listen to more traditional country music than these people.

My dad's side of the family is mostly Irish and until my great-grandparents none of them could read or write, except one guy like 7 generations back who somehow picked it up and never bothered to teach his kids.
TLDR your family line is probably unskilled peons unless you're part of the nobility

Tbh the most useful part of those ancestry DNA things are being able to find relatives. My grandfather died a month after my dad was born, and that part of the family kinda disappeared. We got to learn a little bit about the other half of my family after we took that test so that was pretty cool.

Almost everybody is descended from royalty, actually.

Any given person is going to be mostly peasants with a lot of very famous people just because, if you go back far enough, your family tree begins to resemble a cross-section of society as a whole. What's neat is when you can trace out the names of the ancestors who actually link you, and even better if the descent isn't just a tangled mess but follows some logic (best being pure patrilineal descent).

I do find studying my family history and heritage to be interesting, but I don't get all obnoxious about it.

My heritage is a mix of Irish, German, Italian, and Scots-Irish but for the most part, my ancestors weren't nobility or great esteemed men. They were poor working class Joes and Janes like everyone else. The closest thing to fame in my ancestry and heritage is that a lot of the men in my family were in the military historically speaking.

Based on the documentation I've been able to look up, I've had one ancestor that served in the American Revolution, two ancestors who were brothers who fought for the Union in the American Civil War, a great-grandfather on my Dad's side and a great-uncle on my Mom's who both fought in World War II.

The great-grandfather served in North Africa and was awarded a Silver Star when he saved his squad by taking out a German machine gun nest, while the great-uncle served in France and Belgium and was killed at the Battle of the Bulge.

Another great-grandfather of mine fought in the Korean War as a combat engineer and was awarded the Bronze Star.

My Dad served in the Army in the 1990's and my Uncle on my Mom's side served in Afghanistan in the early 2000's.

With that being said, I'm not some war hero and I just find family history to be a fun subject to research than anything else.
Same. Knowing what you descended from can be interesting as to knowing what part of the world your ancestors came from as well as guessing one of your ancestors was the product of a one night stand between either a barmaid and a drunken European nobleman or a village idiot that managed to reproduce. Even knowing what they did as a living can be interesting, be it good or bad because lets be honest: somewhere down the line we descended from drunks, rapist, heroes, some person of a higher position, etc.

Beyond that though, one trying to LARP their heritage is bound to end in cringe, especially when people from the "motherland" roll their eyes, such as the Irish getting sick of an Irish-American being a plastic paddy. I already know what Asian part of the world I came from but I would find it weird if one thought being in touch with that Asian heritage means walking around in public with a loincloth before every other nation came in and fucked the natives.

All this said, I wouldn't mind knowing what sort of European I descended from beyond hearsay of what my grandfather said but I already know I may as well of been born from the Germans. Yet to confirm being born from the Irish since I'm not a fan of drinking or getting drunk.
