Community watch is known as one of the laughing stocks of this fine forum and one of the reasons why is because half of the OP's for threads are utter shit. Just really really terrible. Now I was gonna make a thread telling people how to make a good OP but it turns out that my little buddy @SunLightStreak already did a great job of doing it.
Which a lot of you should read.

There, read that and better yourselves as posters and your thread won't be locked then I won't have to deal with you. It's a win-win.

Most worthless OP ever according to @AnOminous

https://kiwifarms.net/threads/psychforums.15144/

Even if ADK was just joking, yeah, this is an extreme example of how not to start a thread. The comment right after is a good example of how to make an intro. There's a stark contrast and even the ratings the two different posts got shows this and also shows how much of a difference a good OP can make.

The thread by SLS contains pretty much everything you need to know, but I'll give a few tl;dr summaries :

1. Explain what the website/community is to someone who's never heard of it : it might be about a niche no-one knows about here but might be interested after an explanation.
2. Show screencaps / highlights, don't force people to go to other lolcow-run websites, especially if they might contain shit like cp or malware or illegal content.
3. Detail the chimpouts within the communities and if you're talking about individuals, give us background on them like "known youtuber" says nothing, "known youtuber who makes minecraft videos and is recently involved in a pedophilia scandal" tells better whether the average viewer will give a crap or not.
4. If you're talking about a community you've been a part of, it might be helpful to people if you explained a little what's the angle you're coming from, are you an insider, do you personally have any involvement with the people we're supposed to be documenting - be wary though that just because you narced on them, doesn't mean you get an immunity from mockery if you also confess embarrassing shit like jerking off to cartoon ponies.

(5.) Moral outrage is optional. While the Lolcows we discuss are often unpleasant people, there's no requirement for them to also be abhorrent monsters that should be made to suffer for their crimes. If they're just silly and harmless goofs that are fun to laugh at, you're free to present them as such, the purpose here is to have fun after all.

From my perspective, if you seriously want to make a thread about a fandom or commonly some community, websites about fandoms/communities work better because you got a specific site to find content from. This is why some think that NeoGAF and RationalWiki threads are the best ones here.

lol calm down

You guys have been reporting more and it's awesome, it's a big help to us because we can't read every post and even if you aren't sure if you should report it, do it anyway. Worst that happens is we reject it. Regardless this subforum has slowly been getting better, thanks!

I don't know why this thread was necro'ed with a retarded shitpost (since deleted) but as examples of good OPs, I think PZ's OP of this thread on the TV Tropes community is a good example.

Unlike a lot of these thread openers, it doesn't have an enormous amount of content from the site itself, but it goes into the general history of the community, why it is so fucking autistic, and why the people there are lolcows.

The thread itself is also an example of the kind of community that makes good thread material. Almost any time you feel like it, you can dip into something on TV Tropes and find absolute autism.

True, not every site is going to be the Ground Zero of Internet fandom sperging like TVT is, but when you start a thread, you should really consider what it is about the site that makes it of lasting interest. Many threads in CW suck not because of the OP, and couldn't be saved even with the best OP possible, because the actual topics are shit and of no interest.
