Hi very new to D&D and would love to learn

Do you need to buy the handbook and some 20 sided dice to start playing? I've always been intrigued by DnD, but I'm not sure I want to invest in all the stuff if I don't know whether I'll like it.

I'd be up for a game sometime if people were willing to tolerate an utter noob anyway.

Don't worry I'm an uber noob too, we can be noobs together.

You can get all the books as PDFs online, the dice would be necessary to play in person but if you're going to play with other forum members dice rolling is done as part of the online dealie.

Also, since ~4 people may be interested in playing I'll probably run something if you guys can work out a time.

I'd be interested in playing too if anything goes ahead. As with Foulmouth, though, it depends on whether or not I'll be awake for the games. Also, I know sweet FA about the game, so I'll probably need some pointers (to say the least).

I still have my old DnD handbook from when I used to play in 2000. I'd still go through it to think of how awesome I could have been.

Aaah, I was once shot with a prismatic spray and became insane as part of the spell. And being a non-evil amongst the evil "Drowe" race of Elves was pretty cool.

To bad being a non-evil drow is considered one of the biggest D&D cliches these days.

I mostly play humans, because I love getting a bonus feat and extra skill points. Makes things much more customizable

Gnomes ftw.

Gnomes ftw.

One thing I always thought was interesting about gnomes is that they're one of the few races that grant spell-like abilities without a level adjustment. Granted they're Cantrips mostly but still interesting.

Fun Fact: Pathfinder id away with level adjustments.

So do they not allow some of the more powerful races to be playable or are there different downsides like Racial Hitdie(which was sometimes used in 3.5 alongside LA)

They reworked most races, for example there are two types of Drow, Drow and Drow noble. The base Drow is designed to be a playable race in Pathfinder, built using as point system they devised to balance races. Drow Nobles are wicked OP, but they are a monstrous race, and GMs are advised against allowing players to choose a monsterus race, as they are meant for NPC's only.
