Im quite surprised noone has listed "poverty". While he may have grown up sort of middle class,he and Barb are now poor as church mice. He's also rally lazy, so there's that too
Chris has a problem with being Chris.
Being Chris is his biggest problem.
he wouldn't be poor if he weren't dumb and lazy....
True, but there are plenty of dumb, lazy trust fund kids who are doing ok. Just look at the kadashians!
Chris' poverty is slowly killing him,and many of his problems are tough to reverse without cash.
"and I want a toilet made of solid gold but it's just not in the cards now is it?"Definitely think his arrogance and absolute refusal to change is his biggest flaw. He refuses to acknowledge there's a problem, so it's impossible to fix it. It's a shame, because I would like to see him succeed and pull himself out of that cesspool Barb has dragged him into.
You know, I've got to take exception to the idea that laziness causes poverty. There's a popular American myth that if you work hard, you'll automatically be rich and successful. The truth is, the real world doesn't work out that way. There are plenty of people who work hard, and through nothing more than sheer bad luck, get nowhere in life. And conversely, there are plenty of people who are lazy assholes who manage to get rich. Some people get sick or injured, are victims of crime, or simply inherit money. There's not much inherent morality to work. Hell, in this market some people are lucky to find jobs, and the baby boomers just aren't retiring or even dying like the previous generation.
With regards to Chris, though, I think its hard to pinpoint what his single greatest problem is, because they all cascade into one another. Nobody is going to argue that Chris isn't lazy. He gets tired doing even the simplest tasks, and then "crashes into slumber" from the stress. He wouldn't mow the lawn when he was younger and healthier, what makes anyone think he's gotten better with age and rapidly declining health? However, laziness by itself wouldn't be nearly as much of an obstacle if Chris weren't also so willfully ignorant of the world around him. Yes, I think he is stupid, as in below average intelligence, but its more important to note that he actively tries hard not to learn things or understand how and why the world works. He's genuinely not curious or interested in ANYTHING. Well, anything beyond Pokemon, Legos, MLP and the like, but even then, he's not particularly good at any of those, rendering it a moot point.
And of course, Chris wouldn't be so ignorant and lazy if he weren't also coddled. His parents built up a sense of entitlement in him, which not only feeds into his negative personality traits, but it also is reflected in his childishness. He's comfortable living with mommy and playing with a Lego high school. Nothing wrong with Legos, but most kids grow out of them by high school, or at the very least make insanely elaborate things. Not Chris. He actually seems to be regressing, which would be creepy enough without him also feeling entitled to a woman...
So yeah, the long and the short of it is that Chris is stupid, but also ignorant, which makes him lazy, and his parents coddled him, which gave him a sense of entitlement, which kept him childish. It's a vicious cycle.
Noone is arguing that if chris would just work hard he would not be poor. However, it is reasonable to argue that if he and Barb had not selfishly and greedily blown their money on legos and the hoard, they would both be considerably better off. The truth is Chris shows not an inch of financal responsibility not does he make any effort toward finding honest work. If he did either he wouldn't be such a dirty, greasy pauper.
Chris' biggest problem is that he was born with a chronic mental condition to parents who never made the (sometimes) difficult decisions needed to get him the treatment he needed in order to develop into an independent adult and instead raised him to view himself as special because of it, thereby entitled to whatever he wants when he wants it.
In other words, Chris' biggest problem is that his autism went untreated for far too long.
Not that there's anything wrong with that. His real problem is that he's a self-hating closet gay homophobe, just like Fred Phelps. He's gay amirite guyz???
It's worth mentioning that not only did they make him think he was a special snowflake, but they made him think that that entitled him to all sorts of special treatment. They showered him with toys, vidya, gave him a car and celebrated his birthday well into his twenties. They bargained with people to be nice to him instead of teaching him to be nice, which would have required patience and discipline. They also harassed people who aren't nice to their precious snowflake, like Michael Snyder and the people from the Greene County schoolboard.^This X 1,000,000. Bob the Saintly Lumberjack and his Snorlax went far out of their way to make sure their special snowflake received as little help as humanly possible, making him the unemployable trainwreck we see today.
OK bear with me here...
I'm curious about popular opinion here on our glorious forums.
What do you think Chris's biggest road-block on the path to what he considers happiness?
