the issue is that people like mpoc and other blogs that tout themselves as 'professional' come across as suspect and disingenuous when they can't admit to posting a mistake as fact (assuming it wasn't a calculated PR/patreon grab, bc she's trying to fund an art book), they present historians to the public as asshole idiots who can't stand being proven wrong. not to mention, y'know, lying about your race to get asspats literally never works out for anyone in the end.

the main issue with a lot of the 'history' blogs on tumblr is that they use current terminology to trick people into caring. 'queer', 'trans' gets thrown around all the time in the context of history to make it seem exciting when we have no frame of reference for how historical figures actually identified. woman wears man's clothing to be in the military in highly oppressive and gender-divided societies? SHE'S TRANS!!! (or, she had to cross-dress to make money)

This may look like harmless Hibernophilia but it's actually got a very real political goal - to discredit the status of Maori as NZ's indigenous people by claiming they were simply an older settler wave, and that its original inhabitants were Europeans.

There are parallels in other white settler societies, for example in what's now Zimbabwe the European-dominated government used to claim that the ruins of Great Zimbabwe were actually an old Portuguese fort, because of course Africans could never have built a city like that.

this reminds me of this thesis http://www.faculty.ucr.edu/~legneref/bronze/fellview.htm that gained popularity in the late 70's that the celts had colonised america before colombus- if i recall correctly it was only fully debunked when gaelic linguistics proved that the languages and inscriptions involved were not at all related to q-goidelic.

Revisionism isn't a thing that's unique to totalitarian governments, nor is it a thing that only the SJW boogeyman is/has pushed for. "Whiggishness", for example, depicts history as a progressive march from "bad" to "good". In political terms, a whiggish perspective on history starts with man being stripped of his liberty and toiling under oppression for centuries before enlightenment and revolution and constitutional forms of government coming about. Conveniently, it was a viewpoint rather beloved by the American Founding Fathers as it imbued the United States with a divine sense of "this is what history has been building towards" and the American revolution with a sense of righteousness and divine approval. You also see it a lot in the history of science when people are trying to compare our enlightened modern age to the "Dark Ages" of the past, usually to prove a point. Whig history tends to be pretty prevalent in lower level historical education.

There's also the Lost Cause of the Confederacy as another example of historical revisionism not enacted by a totalitarian government or a group with a PC axe to grind.

If I may also add, revisionism itself is not inherently bad. The history we teach, the history we accept as "fact" usually only came about as a result of revisions, challenging the then-"status quo" of accepted historical theory. Countless concepts that historians now dismiss as inaccurate or overly simplified were once accepted as historical "canon". To claim that the history we teach is some single, unerring "truth" and is under attack from this group or that group is inaccurate as what we accept as history is constantly changing thanks to new schools of thought, new technologies, new discoveries, etc etc. Yes, there is a danger to historical revisionism, but that can be overcome more by teaching how to critically analyze sources or claims and less about rejecting out of hand said claims entirely.

Okay, here's the king of Historical Revision lolcows... Andrew Schlafly's Conservapedia. Schlafly is most easily recognized as the guy who tried to rewrite the Bible to align with his political agenda. It has its own PVCC -RationalWiki started as a bunch of smart-alecks needling the core users at Conservapedia, until they finally realized Conservapedia was its own worst enemy and it was far funnier to record the bullshit they actually believe rather than inserting bogus information.

A very honest assessment of Schlafly -rather than A-Loggy shit, the RW boys (and they're mostly boys) put together a damning report of a man that dares think he's fit to educate children.

This reminds me, I used to lurk on a Black Metal forum (the Black Metal fandom is notoriously full of white supremacists) and there was a member there who wanted to get his PhD in Archaeology and his "hypothesis" was that the pyramids of Egypt were built by ancient "Aryans" because he believed that non-white people could not have possibly built them. I don't know where he was in his education (presumably still a high school student), but I would've loved to see the look on the department chair's face when he read this guy's application to graduate school.

I would like to think that that guy would run into hurdles well before graduate school. Having said that there is a very common story that the "Jews built the pyramids". Menachem Begin said so during a visit to Egypt. I think almost every impressive feat of of ancient architecture that was built by non-white people has some kind of pseudo-historical story about how actually it was built by Europeans (or failing that, Atlanteans, who are always non-white).

But this isn't limited to white nationalists. There was an Indian pseudo-historian named P.N. Oak whose 'Institute for Rewriting Indian History' claimed that both Christianity and Islam originated as perversions of Vedic beliefs and that Vedic civilisations built everything, including the Vatican. He's kind of infamous in Indian academia, although worringly he did get some support from the conspiracy-esque fringes of the Hindutva movement.

A lot of white supremacists I've encountered on the internet sort of hold up Atlanteans/Shangri-La-ians/Lost Continent people as, like, the Ur-Aryans.

Most people want to believe they're special, and will go to incredible lengths to reassure themselves of this belief. Most threads here are about individuals that do this, rather than movements.

I love that sort of thing. Read Fads and Fallacies in the Name of Science, by Martin Gardner. He actually wrote about L. Ron Hubbard before Scientology got up and running.
