I agree to a point, it doesn't bother me personally but I think it is political.
You could arguethat putting a trans character, already a tiny minority even nowadays, thats also a wizard which is also a tiny minority, into a game set in the 1890's is far fetched enough to already be considered virtue signalling at the very least if not an outright political statement. Its similar to including black characters in Medieval works set in Europe, its not being overtly political but its moving the Overton window when people allow it.
