As soon as I saw the title "Horrific Architecture" my first thought was, "Oh good, I can share with everyone the awfulness of the Kunsthaus Graz." Opening the thread and reading OP's comment my thought was "It's the fucking Kunsthaus Graz, isn't it?" Sure enough it is. Such a terrible building, I love it. It actually looks pretty cool from certain angles:

I think the main problem is that this is a very modern, dare I say sci-fi looking building that has been ingloriously plopped in the middle of an old and traditional city. It just ruins the whole skyline.

I'd support

I'd support burning it.

@Rafal Gan Ganowicz this is literally all you had to say.

You literally could have just opened the thread with this instead of sperging out "dem evil commies are gonna ruin the world!!! also they make bad buildings"

Our good friend @Rafal Gan Ganowicz is having a breakdown and won't talk to us and that isn't cool. We need to help our friend.
It appears square buildings is this man's trigger. We need to speak with Autism Speaks to campaign for rounder buildings to appease this poor man's sensibilities. It's time for America to know that the lack of non-square buildings is NOT inclusive.

I'd support

Dem Commies arethe entirety of the problem with the world, spanning from economics to culture,to architecture.I stand by my assertion.

I'll drop the Eiffel tower in here.
One of the most popular structures that I dislike from an aesthetic point of view. Its surroundings as well.

Let tt be a reminder that being a political sperg is the last thing you want to end up as.
Perhaps so, but in this much, he's correct. That building is hideous; shit looks like a discarded organ from a Cthonic god. There's a very real "Emperor's New Clothes" school of thought around much of modern art and architecture and it's distasteful, at best. Distorted carbuncles like that may well provoke discussion but what do they add to the aesthetics of the surrounding area? What beauty do they have in the larger context?

iirc when it was constructed, everyone hated it and there were plans to tare it down.

the french deserve it, really. their symbol is a shitty old oil tower everyone hated that you're legally not allowed to take pictures of at night.

I sorta thought tt was about the trash article he posted and not about one building. The building is divisive, sure, but you can't dismiss the entirety of modern architecture just because somebody did 1 thing you don't like. Added to that this shizo is attributing everything to meme american politics because of-fucking-course he is.

Im gonna need to see some proof of this my dude because as it happens im an "expert" in this field and i just don't see it. The building you're shitting on is an example of "blob" architecture, one of the more out there styles, not popular and by no means common. this doesn't represent the entirety of modern architecture, its actually more like a novelty experiment. Its an attempt to make architecture more fluid and "organic in shape", bring it closer to nature in a sense. The building looks strange from birds eye view but that's not how architecture is designed, the most important perspective is form the ground and there the building looks alright, it also has a pretty interesting interior. Its ok to not like this kind of thing but don't dismiss the ENTIRETY OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE because of 1 or a few examples goddamit. Architects aren't a hivemind, they're actually pretty individualistic and thus they seldom make mistakes you have to stare at while going to work. Shit happens.

The thing retards like to forget is that historical architecture looks cool because we have only preserved its best examples, most buildings were strictly utilitarian back in the day. Only now do we have relative safety and prosperity necessary to experiment and normies go and shit on it.

Architecture is unique among arts because it has to be functional, because of that no building is ever thoughtless and just throwing shit at the wall like some modern art can be. Holy shit i should write an article myself and have autists repost it.

I have yet to see any popularly vaunted examples of modern architecture that didn't detract from the look of their immediate surroundings. I'm not saying all modern architecture is awful, but most of the prominent examples are (to my eye at least) unsubtle and crass, considered in context of their environment. Different for the sake of being different is worthless and performative.
All opinions on matters of aesthetics are subjective; correct opinions don't exist in that context. To each their own.

Interesting thread. I love beautiful buildings with a function and find many modern structures/art ridiculously ugly. If lack of money were an issue, it'd be easier to understand but that's often not the case. Money can't buy you class or a sense of good taste.

Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but when 90% of the people who see a thing, pronounce it hideous -- it's hideous.

and more often than not, the taxpayor funds it. disgusting. these affronts to aesthetics are culturall equivalent to the destruction of the Bamiyan Buddhas. it's intentional dystopia-making

No, if 90% of people are wrong, then it doesn't make them right. As it happens the 90% doesn't know what they're taking about.

Modern architecture looks predominately like this nowadays (form+function, emphasis on materials and textures, usually built with consideration of its immediate environment and the popular ones have a few clever ideas mixed in). Keep focusing on those funny meme buildings though, don't let me stop you.
