Best Sci fi horror that isn't the obvious ones we've all seen? (Predator, Alien, The Thing)

Seconded what Vampirella said. Others:

Entertaining: The Hidden, The Stuff, The Faculty, Dead Heat, The Relic, Deep Rising, Humanoids from the Deep, Virus, The Brain, Altered States, Upgrade, Re-Animator, From Beyond, The Cell, Them.

Interesting: Seconds, It's Alive, Quatermass and the Pit, Halloween III, Phase IV, Hardware, Screamers, Demon Seed, The Fly (the original).

Screamers is such an interesting movie. The idea of a robotic defense system that can fix itself and learn to use deception and play to human emotions isn't used enough in horror. I know some people think it's cheesy but I've always loved it. The kid screaming was creepy.
It's such a weird combination of old Doctor Who/Twilight Zone-style teleplay and high-spec 90s production. I assume a lot of people go into it expecting an action movie and come out disappointed.

The Fly
Videodrome
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
Godzilla
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Island of Lost Souls
The Brood
Village of the Damned
Frankenstein
Bride of Frankenstein
The Curse of Frankenstein
Tremors

I guess these ones would be considered "junk" or whatever, but we love our junk!
Frankenhooker
Killer Klowns from Outer Space
Bad Taste
Night of the Comet
The Toxic Avenger
The Deadly Spawn
Phantasm

And if you haven't seen it already, you should check out Horror Express. It's based on the same story as Carpenter's The Thing, but it came out first.

is it actually based on the same short? tbh I thought it was just a similar premise
but yeah it's a great Cushing/Lee joint, and as soon as things start to drag Telley Savalas jumps in and chews a bunch of scenery
I generally downplay the Thing-ness of it so it's more of a surprise, it's a pretty good sell as an I Can't Believe It's Not Hammer! production where Lee and Cushing fight an ancient evil that awakes on a train, otherwise people can get a little hyped for something it isn't quite
like how it's hard to sell people on Shock Waves without making it sound a lot less like an atmospheric spooky castle movie and more like a crazy splat itajank when you tell them about Peter Cushing's army of underwater nazi zombies

That would be the best way to go about it. When I watched Horror Express for the first time, I knew nothing about it. So when it eventually dawned on me that it had the same plot as The Thing, it was kinda mind blowing! It definitely added something to the viewing experience. But, for the purposes of this thread, I figured the best way to make the movie stand out would be by talking about its connection to The Thing, especially because @Kofi Drinka mentioned The Thing in his original question.

And I can't believe I forgot to include Flesh for Frankenstein in my earlier post. Definitely a junk classic.

Maybe I'm too autistic about horror but a lot of these movies seem mainstream to me. The Fly, Videodrome and a lot of others always seem to do the rounds.

Fair enough. I don't know what you've seen, so I just listed off what I thought were some of the best movies in the genre. If you're looking for stuff that's more obscure, what about The Cat, The Resurrected, The Borrower, Patrick Still Lives? I wasn't necessarily crazy about any of these films, which is why I didn't recommend them in the first place, but maybe you'd get more out of them than me (provided you haven't already seen them).

I did get a kick out of The Mask of Fu Manchu.

I watched The Cat last year. It was really good. Some brilliant practical effects towards the end. Good recommendation.

Not sure how long ago last year you watched it, but it came out on a nicely restored Blu-ray in September. Prior to that, it was only available on DVD with a very cruddy looking transfer (which is how I first watched it). The Blu-ray is a massive upgrade. A rip of it can be downloaded here.

I mean I guess it's good to have a another Carpenter movie in there, but the NFI really lost its luster, shoving shit like 12 Years a Slave, The Hours and Real Women Have Curves and shit in there. Like I get that Brokeback is in there, because that was actually a touchstone (lol) movie among faggots. But no one in the black OR cinematic community remembers or references 12 years.

Also, while I love The Thing, and think it's a much better movie, I'd rather have They Live or Escape From New York in the NFI, since he's already got a horror movie in. Or Big Trouble in Little China if they had the balls.

Autistic friend asked me to go see Iron Lung with her in theaters and I did. It was so boring that we left midway through. It holds the record for most fake blood used in a film and they got Troy Baker to be in it so that's cool. The acting is uneven and the concept of the game really cannot be stretched to a feature-length film.
