A lot of people, myself included, didn't like the way the protagonist in Terrifier 1 was handled, and I think that's what they were pivoting away from.
What didn't you like about how the protagonist was handled? I would have thought people had more issue with the side characters.

The friend is stripped naked, strung up in a BSDM-reminiscent way, and sawed from crotch to head. The crazy cat lady extends a mothering hand to Art and he cuts off her breasts and wears them. The protagonist (and her sister) got beat up a lot but neither of them suffer sexual or sexually-charged violence iirc.

Anyway, the original Art in All Hallow's Eve was much more explicitly misogynistic.
It's on my list. I watched the short that the Terrifier film is based on and at the end the woman ends up completely nude, arms and legs severed, with misogynist insults carved into her like bitch, slut, cunt, etc. Which is odd because I don't think she actually does anything to Art and he doesn't seem to have personal beef with his targets.

Was catching up on the thread and watched "Him" and "Sketch" based on comments here.

"Him" was fucking trash and I agree with what's already been said. Lots of style, dog shit acting and story.

"Sketch" was more enjoyable up until the halfway point. After a while I determined it had to be writen or directed by a woman/gay man based on jokes, characters, diversity, lack of actual men, etc.

I was close. Writer/Director Seth Worley looks very
similar to the dad in the movie. I'm surprised the kids in the movie don't call him a faggot and kick his ass.

Good style and effects, terrible action sequences. I know I'm asking a lot for a movie with kids but the fight sequences are the over acting, looks-like-a-rehearsal fight slop that kills the suspension of disbelief. The jokes also got extremely lame. I was definetely not the target audience for this.
The only HIM I like is Join Me in Death.

....I'll get me jacket.

Well the shock value of dropping the MC like a bag of garbage isn't worth the cost of not gaf about what happens the last half hour or so of the movie. Violence against women is one thing, but violence against proper narrative structure crosses a line. Gotta say that Art is pretty equal opportunity in his sexualized violence in Terrifier 2-3.

Italian horror as a whole is pretty overrated, tbh
Well maybe they aren't the absolute best movies ever made but then again eh maybe they are.

I thought it was a clumsy homage to Psycho and A Nightmare on Elm Street but I might be giving it too much credit.

Just saw Black Phone 2. I knew nothing about it going in and it was OK overall. There were some exciting/interesting parts but the spaces between those seemed long and drawn out. At least there was an ending unlike some horror movies where it just ends after everything goes to shit.
Some good style choices like dreams being in fuzzy film quality. Two scenes seemed unnecessary since it was after a character discovers something and they retell it to a group in the most blunt way.
The best part actually came from a scene where I recalled what @Kofi Drinka (I think) said what he wanted in a horror movie. I think it was pretty close to what he described and I wondered if he read an early script about it.
It's pretty much what he wanted out of a Friday the 13th reboot. Kids getting murdered and the murderer is pretty much Freddy. If you took a very loose interpretation of "The dream warriors" and set it at camp crystal lake with the killer being buffalo bill, thats black phone 2.

Watched Weapons last week. 6/10; well produced but not particularly spooky. I enjoyed the sound design and soundtrack. Lost at least one point for doing that stupid thing where they will have a dream sequence or something similar that doesn't really have any meaning and is simply an excuse for them to shoot scenes for marketing purposes:

Watched High Tension a couple nights ago. 2/10. Felt like I was watching a good movie until the twist (which wasn't particularly subtle I thought?), after which nothing meant anything and I completely lost interest. I've done a decent bit of delving into 'New French Extremity' over the last couple years; some are genuinely fantastic and others are..... this.

Got a bunch of other stuff downloaded for the rest of Spooktober. Calvaire , Cure , Alien which I somehow don't think I've ever seen. Probably going to give Titane a rewatch since I now have a nice quality version of it. Also just now grabbed a copy of Solvent which I have been waiting for a download for since I heard about the film last year

As a horror fan the idea of the Carpenter's Son could be interesting. Exploring how Jesus learned to control his powers, how Jesus' family dealt with the Son of God living with them. Also it's nice to see a horror movie with Biblical themes that isn't just possession or the end times are coming. As a good Catholic girl the movie is blasphemy because the Infancy Gospel of Thomas isn't part of the Bible. I don't know, I'm a bit torn on it, mostly because I don't know if this concept could be done right. I do love horror movies with Biblical themes, the Bible is just full of stuff that's perfect for horror movies that isn't just possession.

The goofy insincere tone. Like it's so above being a horror film like a lot of modern horror. It's not marketed as a horror comedy as far as I can tell.
Also I'm lazy and pretty much agree with everything in this post: https://kiwifarms.net/threads/horror-general-megathread.96134/post-22239081
I mean I don’t know why people wouldn’t expect some humor in a movie made by a guy from WKUK

The big question is what the fuck happened to Jordan Peele that none of his movies are funny on purpose

I'd take the angle of a body cam attached to a police dog, I think there's a few fun ways you can take that. Maybe just go for broke, investigate a cult ala Jones Town POST flavor aid

the cat's owners get spooped to death as the cat gives no fucks, then he realizes the ghosts won't feed him or clean his litter
now it's personal.
I think what could be effective with them is where they wonder off and how they go to thosr places like a dog could wonder through narrow spaces and a cat through high areas playing on claustrophobia and acrophobia

Also helps that it's Nic Cage leading. I am very fond of him these days. He's the actor equivalent of a 'so bad it's good' film and has done some damn good work over the last 5 or so years.

All jokes of Wilfred aside (great actor and amazing meme man but still a great actor first), this is one of the most eerie scenes in the movie despite The Thing not being in it physically, and yet its presence and horror is very much felt. The visuals and score say so much without a piece of dialogue said.

There is a special appeal in seeing what is a man of science slowly dawning that he is dealing with something beyond human understanding, not only that but what he CAN understand is that this entity spreads so catastrophically quick and effectively that if a single cell of this thing reaches any significant human settlement or hell, anything with wings or fish scales, and its absolutely over. This entity will become absolutely impossible to contain and it will contaminate everything sooner or later. So many unanswered questions but pondering on them will not only be more maddening but it dawns on him that their only shot at stopping this is by preventing the organism from escaping this white frozen hellscape, even if it costs their lives.

Not only that but he knows there is a very big chance at least one of them had been already assimilated and is likely already hard at work at spreading, Blair might as well be the only one he knows is 100% still human.

One might say Blair made a mistake in going mad with an axe but honestly, to go back to the man of science, what happens when said men are confronted with a horror that laughs at the rules of all that is known? Im not so sure myself but Im sure extreme and even insane solutions start to sound a whole more like the only choice.
