they say oh stop being in an echochamber watch other views and its all this loony shit and all the comments agree nobody ever desents from the video its always agreement how do people end up unironically thinking this way im bamboozled tell me your thoughts kiwis

People who can't form coherent thoughts thinking they should film themselves going on at length sharing their stupid thoughts isn't the shocking thing.

The shocking thing is people watch and enjoy these.
EXACTLY i remember seeing one theory which is true that the reason leftists excel at video eassays is because you can go on for hours without any fact checking while sounding smart with slick camera work vs debates you can call out their crazy to their face unlike video essays where nobody wants to make a response to a 1 hour plus video and the ones that do are supressed by youtube and get less views than the video essays much like most the videos they have "responded" to are banned

I don't know why Wikipedia credits this dude as this is an old idea, but it will suffice to explain the concept:

It's funny that the page for it shares an earlier formulation but still credits the other guy, the other version I remember was from the Cold War regarding how the Soviets could issue statements full of lies and Americans/capitalists/etc. would have to spend all their time refuting every single one or else the Soviet statement would be treated as factual:

edit: This quote I think also applies and explains some of the indifference to evidence and argument:

So that guy makes motorcycle videos (furthering my belief all bikers motor or pedal, are fucking homos) and decides one day to talk about trannies and faggots like a retard would and GETS HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF VIEWS. lol

If it makes you feel any better, most of the top comments are from women. There's nothing the AFAB mafia loves more than validation from a guy old enough to be their dad.

LMAO REALLY THATS VERY FUNNY the biker to breadtube pipeline is real

Everytime I see the phrase video essay, I think of games that didn't die, they were murdered.

It's taken me years of subjecting The Algorithm to constant abuse and corrective electric shocks to get to the point where the only 'video essays' I see are from trusted vidyagame talker-abouters.
I dread the day I have to make a new youtube account and retrain it from the ground up. But then, I guess if that happened, I wouldn't have much reason to use youtube again.

This is a good place to share a memory that pops into my head about once a week about HBomberguy's Sherlock 'essay' which was one of the first of the hyper-long left video essay genre, I believe.

In it, he compares the bad sherlock to a 'good' sherlock and in the good sherlock he highlights a scene in which Sherlock concludes that there was a heavy safe added to a house because he noticed a marble rolling to one side of the room, indicating the floor slanted from the added weight. What Hbomb meant to say about this scene was something like "This scene works because an actual person could come to that conclusion with that information in the real world" He instead said one of the stupidest thing's I've ever heard with complete sincerity:

"Just for contrast, the first time we see CBS's 'Elementary's' he discovers a hidden room by feeling the incline of the floor. The extra weight of a safe room steel reinforcements can cause a slope between 1 and 5 degrees. This thing with the marble is clever and based on quite simple It's not rocket science, but it's a believable deduction And it did just teach you an actual real-life way of solving crimes."

I know it's not as stunning as other things on this site, but the profound stupidity of claiming this scene is imparting some sort of practical life-lesson has legitimately made me laugh for years now. True, he probably would say he misspoke and meant something else, but that's why you do a ten minute view and not an assinine two hours.

I have never watched a hbomberguy video, and never want to, but I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that his criticism of Sherlock can just be summed up with this 4chan post and not with an hours long video:

In other news, I stumbled across this Odysee channel called “American Krogan” a while ago and it’s the weirdest thing since it’s video essays on vidya but it’s from a White nationalist anti-Semitic guy.

Anyways, I watched his series on Bioshock and while I think he was on to something, I don’t fully agree with his analysis just as an example, he points out that Andrew Ryan, who is established by the creator as Jewish, is in opposition to Frank Fontaine, who of course turns out to be the twist villain, and is non-Jewish. He pushes this as the game promoting Semitic themes, I suppose thinking that once Fontaine is revealed as the main villain, that Ryan is not a villainous character anymore, which I think is a stretch.

I will say his series of videos on Bioshock Infinite is much more compelling in pointing out the anti-White themes of the game, it’s really irritating that a lot of people treat it as some “centrist” game that criticizes the left and the right, and he does a good job of dispelling that myth. (One thing that I always thought was stupid about that game is that the evil preacher is obviously some flavor of Protestant, yet he has statues and shit of the Founding Fathers treating them as SAINTS, y’know the thing that Protestants have historically criticized the Catholics for?)

I'm going to guess you might be Catholic lol (or possibly just not American). Historically Protestants attacked the Catholic church for idolatry but I haven't met an American Protestant in my life who seriously holds that as a point of contention, I've only ever heard Catholics responding to it hypothetically. In my experiences with American Protestants, canonizing the founding fathers is the most on-brand thing I can imagine lol.

Wrong on both counts, but I appreciate the effort ;)

I think one of the only other video essays I’ve watched, which coincidentally was also on Bioshock, was from this channel called “Leadhead”, I think that video was a better analysis of the game, but I remember looking at that dudes YouTube description and realizing that he trooned out. I guess that’s just what happens to people in that sphere.

I definitely appreciate channels like American Krogan doing video essays from a very different perspective than the usual, even if they do fall into the same trap of over-analysis sometimes. I highly recommend you check out that series if you have the time, even if you don’t fully agree with them (again, I find the videos on Infinite much more interesting and compelling, so if you just want to check those ones out that’s fine, that’s what I did too).

Consider the following: People don't want to work.

Youtube is very saturated so if you can't make more interesting content you resort on making it longer because more equals better.

Someone would spend 10 hours straight sperging about harry potter being a nazi if they think that will make some people donate to their channel and gets them out of working a normal job.

@Seafarer American Krogan (going off his RDR2 video, the only one I remember watching) makes correct points but it's drowned out by him stretching every petty thing into secret Leftist propaganda. One particularly galling one was him taking a scene where Arthur Morgan takes sympathy on a deserter when he finds out the man is hiding an Indian wife. He literally refers to it as "miscegenation is the key to his heart," not, you know, the PREGNANT WOMAN. He comes across to me as a dishonest person with an axe to grind.

I will agree with Second Hand Boat Supplies that you're taking saints too literally, and a cult of personality is completely consistent with how people treated the Founding Fathers in the early US.
