How can I stay motivated and not be embarrassed to be learning something new?

If you make it clear you are a n00b and humble yourself before people who actually know what they are doing and take direction well, people with gladly work with you if you are serious. They will recognize that they were like you when they first start out and have some empathy for it. Plus if they also love their hobby, they will be glad to teach it to others.

You are going to fail a bunch of times, but what is important is learning from the failure and improving. The common thread with lolcows anywhere on this site is they simply do not learn from mistakes and strive be better for them, rather they repeat them and become worse for them.

If somebody says anything about you playing badly offer them the instrument and tell them to do better.

Warning: There's a 1% chance that they know how to play and this is a terrible move, use at your own discretion.
