Be more proactive in eliminating or otherwise dealing with whatever bullshit you're praying about; so the relationship isn't this one-sided affair in which you only reach out for solace. That quality isn't even attractive in a catamite - God's liable to start answering your prayers in a fake Chinese voice, saying "He no here."

Church; there is a misunderstanding even among Christians that you need to go to church to be saved, but you don't, it's for your own sake to strengthen your faith through fellowship.

This is relevant to what i wanted to say which will be apparent in a second.
If you want to know God you need to be sincere first of all. Others have written about not beating yourself up if you relapse and such, and while that is a component do not let it become an excuse either if you say relapse and start watching porn 20 times are you sincerely trying to self improve?
Second you need to have genuine humility, this entails recognizing your place in the world for what it is, and also being respectful of others positions especially relative to Gods. God simultaneously is transcendent yet penetrates reality, this is one of his attributes. Being humble doesnt mean you have to be a doormat which will be relevant to the next point.
You must surrender to God and be devout. Surrendering is not submission surrender is a voluntary act made in total humility and without ego.
Submission is being forced into a position and often times through acts of violence.
So what are the first steps to that? Well acknowledgement of the supreme absolute is the first, but also cultivating a 2 way mode of communication. Prayer is relevant but one way, meditation and deeply focusing on God is two way.
Understand as well that the finite can only know the infinite through the grace of the infinite, so there are no shortcuts and you have to put in the work, hence why I quoted that post in specific, God doesnt exist to satisfy the needs of your self esteem and you have to achieve your deeper reconnection since the implication of our positions now in life is we at some point got distracted or turned away.
In this way you can develop a better connection to God, and he will help you along your journey. God helps those that help themselves, and he always love us and is part of our reality in subtle ways.

I was just fooling around. I don't believe in God and I think people that think he talks to them are either delusional or insane. But hey, if you think he is talking to you, have good times with that. Some of us pay a lot of money to experience delusional thoughts as a form of escapism, but if they come to you without drug assistance, good for you.

You are right to think what you do in regards to being spoken too directly in many cases it is exactly as you said the result of mental illness. What I described is not the same but it is easy to make that conclusion.
Generally speaking those who have had real divine contact find it too personal to speak about and disclosure of such a thing is done in confidence with a trusted spiritual guide, not parading around on social media for clout or what have you.

For my own advice to the OP, listen. The guidance is always there within us but we often choose to listen to other things. It's always a choice, every moment. In any moment of uncertainty pause and listen within. See what you are guided to do or feel the better path is, and then do that. This will help you cultivate good habits which are important and make life closer to what you want it to be over time. Making good choices will also help you make later good choices more easily.
Study is good and can help, but also God is not in the books. You must choose to listen. Instruction is only the signpost.

Yeah…so he talks to you but you can’t remember what he said. That’s strange. You know if I happened to run into Billy Idol or something and he told me something, I’d remember it exactly, but someone like God speaks to you and you totally forget? Weird.
