How come only 5.8% of people know how to solve a Rubik's cube? - I find solving Rubik's cubes really easy.

Solution
Because its boring. If you wanted to solve a Rubik's cube starting with no knowledge, it would be trivially easy, all you have to do is look up a tutorial online and follow it, the internet has taken all its mystery away.
I've never been able to solve mine. Eventually I'll get it but there's only so much time to devote to the Cube.

Not going to look up how to do it because that defeats the entire point of the puzzle.

It's a puzzle similar to Peg Solitaire where you jump the pegs and need to end up with 1 in the center- without any instructions you just don't know how to figure out how to solve it and just move randomly hoping for the best. But if you follow instructions how to solve it that takes the fun away.

The best puzzles are the ones where you can actually work out how to solve by yourself.

Well first you must ask "how many people have made a serious effort trying to solve one?"
I personally have never owned a Rubik's cube. I think I fiddled around with one for like 5 minutes as a child at a friend's house once.

Related question: how many people can do the alphabet backwards without pausing? I can do it easily but that's because I've practiced. I have yet to meet anyone else with that particular useless talent.

So you're saying 5.8% of the population solve 100% of them? Really makes you think.

despite making up 5.6% of the population ...

I've never been able to solve mine. Eventually I'll get it but there's only so much time to devote to the Cube.

Not going to look up how to do it because that defeats the entire point of the puzzle.

that's how i feel. the point and the fun is just figuring it out yourself. i hate people who do the 'just look it up' when it comes to figuring out puzzles and such.
