How do we know that Stephen Colbert isn't still playing a character? - Is he just pulling the most elaborate troll of all time?

Giving that Colbert has a history of portraying an over-the-top caricature of political talking heads, what makes us think that he stopped? Could he be engaging in some post-modern parody/criticism of left wing of talk show host like Jimmy Kimmel and James Corden? You could also take it a step further and say that he's performing meta-irony commentary on what conservatives think leftist are like. Either way, I'm pretty sure it's a troll at this point.

I don't think this is the most likely scenario, but if I wanted to make a case for it I would point to how savagely his animated news show-forget the name-went after those Lincoln Project grifters which made me think his Trump Derangement Syndrome at least didnt graduate towards the rehabilitation of Bush like it did for so many others.

Really though, most people have very fickle loyalties to begin with. May have once been more reasonable, but being surrounded by radical ideologies near-constantly does a lot to influence someone. Then, add in having nothing but Yes Men around, and the ability to think critically or self-analyze drops pretty quick.
Celebrities also tend to not have much in the way of individualism. Have to keep up with the trends to keep getting work.
