How do you refer to the character you control in a video game? - Optionally, explain why that one, and not the others. Or situational requirements.

I don't refer to them unless someone asks, or for some reason I'm writing about it and forced to address it, which isn't common.

Has been many years since that, but I'd use either their name, say "my/the character", or "my (insert name)", probably in a fighting game.

So it depends.

Usually just "me" unless something really disconnects me from the character.

In an RPG setting or something with a character creation option usually I'll see them as "me" (but like, cooler cause they're an orc)
If I'm playing a game as a specific character I'll just refer to them by their name, and then I'll blame all my fuckups on them instead of me- i.e "Mario, why did you miss that jump, you fucking dago"

If it's a flesh out actual character I just use there name but if they're just a self insert or custom character I just call them "my guy"

It depends on the game. I usually refer to them as "me" or "my character" if they're one I created. Otherwise, I'll use the character's name.
