How do you stop an android phone from stopping an upload / download when it goes to sleep? - How?

Surely there is a better way than tricking your phone into thinking you are watching something to stop it going to sleep.

Put it on a charger, change screen timeout to an hour, then stream movies on your phone while downloading your file. If the movie finishes before it's done, you have an hour to start up another movie to stream.
