How have the farms changed you?

  • I feel like I have more respect for different opinions than I did in the past, even about controversial topics.
  • I understand 'diversity' better; in some communities, 'diverse' just means "filled with specific minority groups" but this userbase is actually diverse and gets along well with each other.
  • I have a better understanding of how and why someone might allow social media and/or an online community to take precedence over their real life. I feel like I can safely avoid it happening again in my life and can better articulate to others what the risks are.
  • Relatedly, I think I understand mental health better the more I consider the patterns in the lives of people discussed here. A lot of times, there is actual suffering (bad life events) followed by a failure to move past that suffering in a constructive way, leading a person to 'wallow' ad infinitum, with their mental health worsening the longer they stagnate. Breaking that cycle is the most important first step.
  • I realized that having a collectivist worldview was stressing me out and IMO wasn't a healthy outlook anyway. Society is not responsible for an individual's life choices, for better or worse. There are too many people making bad choices for it to be fair to have other people pay for those choices, and obtaining your own resources with your own effort builds a sense of self-worth and independence.
  • Similarly, I realized that 'oppression' -- although real -- is often just the pain that a person is putting themself through because they think society will oppress them if they attempt to integrate. Certain political ideologies basically teach people that they're doomed from the start in their education, job search, and healthcare coverage just for being minorities, and it's not reflective of reality. All people can find their place in a society, especially in America.
  • I care less and less about the 'wrongness' of things that I can't control. There is a certain point where it's time to move on from unresolved issues even if you feel like there's more you could say. (This part took me a bit longer to learn.)
  • I laugh more easily, be it at the world, at other people's lives, or at myself and my own past. Taking things too seriously can really sour your outlook and personality after a while.
  • Plenty more shit that I won't list. This place really helped me.

I've learned that I really do hate human beings. Ants are far superior. At least they're fair in their ceaseless hostility to all outside of the colony. And they're nowhere near as fucked up.

The internet feels like a more boring, predictable place than ever despite there being way more crazy shit going on for current events.
