This is a problem that's been noticed in racial statistics, to take from one of the more famous surveys available for free online, back in 2001 Gallup found that most people think up to 40% of the country is Black, not the 14% they are: https://news.gallup.com/poll/4435/public-overestimates-us-black-hispanic-populations.aspx

This was replicated in another survey that I can't link you at the moment in recent decades where people commonly estimated that the United States was already 50+% non-white when it's remained 70+% white and demographic trends don't suggest it will actually become majority non-white in any of our lifetimes.
