How much ammunition is too much?

All the ammo you can get your hands on.

Edit: serious answer, as much as you can reasonably carry or put in a vehicle in case you need to GTFO outta Dodge.
Considering the current ammo shortages, "All the ammo you can get your hands on" is something to seriously consider. Especially in the unlikely event that Crazy Uncle Joe and Kamala the Kool Kop get elected.

It doesn't matter, if you don't own any weapons. Other than that, ammunition lasts much longer than food. As others have said, invest in a climate controlled place to keep your ammo. I don't suggest the wine cellar, even if the conditions are good for both.

Damn bro.

Here we're still getting ammo at the pre-covid prices, but anything that gets imported now will be about 25% more. Ammo is stupidly expensive here, I pay $40 for a 20 box of .308. Getting 1000 rounds is beyond my capabilities.

I'm sorry to hear that. Although 50 cents a round for 308 seems normal, if not a little bit high. I don't know if Australia allows bulk orders but that's how I get all of mine. In the US all ammo of every caliber has skyrocketed because people are prepping for civil war 2. 9mm could be had for 17 cents per round and now the cheapest I can find is 45. :(

At least 1 bullet for the population of your town. Heaven help you if you live in a big city
I was talking to the local cop when I moved in (we have to get safe inspections done when we move) and he told me that there's more firearms than people in my town. It wouldn't surprise me, my neighbour has 8, and I know the guy across the road has a bunch as well.
We're pretty peaceful though, there's no litter and no graffiti in town, because people have civic pride, and kids are actually disciplined to respect others. If I still lived in Melbourne, I'd be way more concerned.

50 cents a round sounds like a dream... Pretty much all centrefire ammo is in the $2-$2.50 a round range, with some outliers (300 WM is about $3.50). Big calibers (and pistol calibers) are way more, 45-70, 9mm, and 357M are $5 a round.
Shotgun ammo is way cheaper.. about 30 cents if you buy in bulk.

Chill the fuck out. Society is not going to collapse so bad that basic resources are gonna be fought over. Worst case scenario you need to deal with looters and or self protection.

Now, yah, yah, store enough in case of mad max scenario, have more and more... k blow me. I will not spend more on ammo than I need. Couple of boxes here and there. It's not healthy to think about how to storage tools to murder other humans with.

You can never have too much, but I like to keep at least 500 rounds of most calibers I own outside of 20 gauge just to be on the safe side. A lot of commonly used rounds are bought the same day they’re put on shelves where I live so it’s hard to get them unless you buy online.

No such thing.

You know, for all the talk of "ZOMG can you believe this mass shooter had several thousand rounds of ammo??? HOW did we let this HAPPEN??????" you see in the wake of such tragedies, it's really not uncommon to unload a few hundred rounds in one session at the range.

lol, I bet most of you spergs are hoping that the Metro 2033 Economy will flourish? Just keep yourself locked in with your ammo, I'll be out trying to get laid with the starving single moms when SHTF with my MREs.

It depends on your circumstances, approach to firearms, budget, and space available. If you live in a city and only have a firearm for self defense one box will do. If you enjoy shooting get more. How often are you going to shoot? What caliber? All of that matters.

I keep around 1000 rounds of 556 and various pistol and hunting rifle calibers and have kept about that amount for a while, since before 2020. Also have god knows how many shotgun shells, a lot. That's really not much ammo compared to some people but it's more than most. I just like to feel comfortable plinking around and knowing I still have enough back at home and I really like plinking. I'm not that worried about crime or civil disorder near where I live and don't consider myself a prepper, I just like to have backups of everything and not just ammo.

5.56/223 and 9mm are really hard to find in my area now and have been since May or so. Someday I'll get around to buying a shit ton of 556 but not right now.

I just can't seem to stop buying, and I'm wondering if I'm developing OCD about it.

Yea I know that feel, I'm in the same boat.

Buy as much as you can reasonably afford.

And also keep in mind that one caliber doesn't have to be only one brand/type. For example, you should buy sizable quantities of cheaper ammo for practice, fun, and of course for SHTF, but you should also look into buying small quantities of more effective and expensive rounds in the same caliber (hollow points, ballistic tips, etc.) for self defense and hunting (if you plan on doing that).

One the subject of ammo, one of my CCW rounds got mashed down further into the casing. Is it still safe to fire?
