How to deal with a creeper?

I'm a long-time lurker, finally got the courage to join this brave and stunning community and figured I'd post on here for advice. Fuck you if this isn't the appropriate place to post.
Without power-leveling too much, I am a minecraft noob and am only on day 14 of my newly started hardcore world. I come here because this is actually my 12th hardcore world that I have started. Judging by the thread title you can probably already assume why that is but if it isn't clear I'll spell it out. CREEPERS. these green fuckers keep stalking me, hiding behind trees, sneaking into my base, and generally being creepy. I cannot figure out why I keep dying to them as I have already tried many things to minimize their impact on me and my world such as building a wall around my base and crafting a shield but it seems this is not enough.

After building a walled off base, I noted that:
  1. Creepers still spawned around my base making leaving dangerous
  2. Im still caught off guard when out adventuring
Most recently, I tried to make use of a shield but on multiple occasions my game lagged and despite holding up the shield the creepers blast went right through it.
tldr; creepers keep ending my hardcore worlds and the tutorials aren't helping.

I feel like I'm at a loss when dealing with creepers. What should I do?

In the early game, just make sure to place lots of torches everywhere. With enough torches you're basically playing on peaceful mode. Walled compounds are only necessary for villages to make raids easier to deal with.
Protip: if you place any random block on the ground between yourself and the creeper before it explodes then you'll only take trivial amounts of damage.

You can melee them to death if you get the timing down. Their explosion timer resets every time they're hit. An Iron Sword takes them down in 3 hits if I'm remembering correctly. Cobblestone is decently resistant to their explosions, but Obsidian laughs right in their face. Getting a lot of Obsidian is a bitch though.

Also Penis Dragger's advice will help. Keeping things illuminated helps keep out all spawns but Slime. I'm also fairly certain Ocelots specifically exist to deal with Creepers. If you can find some, tame them.

Keep in mind I haven't played Minecraft in like 8 years.

1. Constantly check your surroundings when you are near dark places, monsters can spawn in those areas at any moment. Place torches everywhere you go to avoid monster spawns and leave a trail you can follow to get out of a dungeon / mine.

2. Get the best armor your can as soon as you can. If you are wearing even full iron armor you can survive a creeper exploding unless its literally right next to you.

3. I don't know if you can still do it but I used to be able to sprint forward, sword swipe and then immediately run back to keep a creeper at bay.

4. When exploring a dark dungeon or area don't go around too fast or you might run into a creeper hiding around a block.

5. Keep your sword out in open areas so you can smack the creeper and bounce them back before running away to minimize damage. In tight quarters like a mine consider having cobblestone blocks immediately accessible with a simple scroll wheel or whatever on console so you can switch and build a wall in front of you.

6. Make random swastikas all over the map, it has a 41% chance to kill monsters worse then creepers. Works very well in online play.

If you want a non-shitposting answer, when he brushes up against you scream "STOP TOUCHING ME!" either he will eventually stop, or someone will beat the shit out of him, and then he will stop.
